I have a 2008 1.6 hdi 90hp berlingo, egr but no fap. 130k
New egr valve september 2014, 12 months later it's running badly and stalling, egr clean fixes the problem for abour a week.
At this point reluctant to fit a new valve every year I fit a blanking plate which fixes the issue but engine management light comes on, code related to egr.
A month later light goes off and stays off, happy days.
Then occasionally it bucks, as if the engone locked up for a split second, at any rev count in any gear.
Engine light will occasionally go on for a few days but then go off for a few weeks.
On one occasion it wouldn't start,20 mins later started fine.
So my question is, once the egr is blanked is it out of the system or is the fact the egr is broken/clogged and isn't working properly causing it to send out readings to the ecu causing the above symptoms? The vehicle is bangernomic so looking at outlay here, don't want to start chucking money at it as it essentially still gets me from a to b.. However if 100 quid coupd make it drive nicely (relative term there, it is a cheap french diesel) I'll happily spend it!
Are you sure the egr valve was the problem and not a sensor?
I had a few issues, even after changing egr valve. Fitted a new sensor, has been as good as gold for the last two years.
That was pretty much what I was asking! I know the egr caused the rough running issues as cleaning it fixed the issue, it's the minor bucking issue I'm not sure about, if it can't be that I'll live with it but if there's a good chance it'll fix it I'll fit a new egr
It’s getting dirty for a reason, surely?

Probably related to the fact it essentially chucks soot from the exhaust back into the engine
Engine management light was on for a reason. Just because it went off after a month doesnt mean the issue isnt there. On my car it means - gone into base map mode yer maf sensors still ****ed 🙂 but on base map we dont use the maf so no longer an error .....
Lets start with the basic and stop guessing. - get the codes read by someone with propper citeon softwear. Generic readers often dont pick up citroen error codes.
There are many items besides egr that can cause what you describe.

'Essentially' what they do is recirculate CO2 back to the inlet, lowering the proportion of N2 in the air and reducing NOX emissions as a result.
If you have excessive soot you have other problems (injectors?).
If you blank off the EGR then although the car runs without it, its an incredibly selfish thing to do. NOx is nasty, responsible for many things from asthma to smog and low level ozone production. Thats why car's have to have EGR valves.
Hmmm fair point there, manufacturing and landfilling a valve a year must offset that a bit.
I think mine may be clogging quickly due to alot of short trips
does it have a manifold pressure sensor? my transit has one that clogs up which leads to it lumpily ticking over. A blast with carb cleaner sorts it.
Drill a pencil hole in the egr blanking plate.
Sudden dropping in revs for a second sounds like a problem I had with crank shafts sensor not being able to read RPM.
Wrong grade of oil can cause premature gumming up of the EGR...you get low ash versions or something, sometimes you will find two oils for the same model, depending on whether an EGR and/or DPF is fitted.
I know on my van, blanking/deleting the EGR is quite complex, with someone who does remaps adjusting the ECU settings, but even then it still causes problems.
Other potential issues (not specific to the Berlingo) are dodgy camshaft and crankshaft sensors, timing belt having jumped a tooth or two can cause hard starting. A basic leak-off test from the injectors can also reveal if they are in good working order or not. (google it)

So is driving a car.
Cheers all, some things to look into there. Crank position sensor sounds likely
I have read that on some cars you need to map out or re programe the ecu if remove or blank the egg
Try tge rank sensor make sure you use a gen one as after market ones are crap, had a zafira do this so try the cheap option first.
For around £50 you can get a clone Citroen/Peugeot diagnostic system. Even cheaper from Aliexpress.
Well worth the investment.

Not really. My EGR's blanked because it's unreliable and not really fit for purpose. If the manufacturers had made it work right, it wouldn't be blanked. Take it up with them.
