How can they phase out diesel cars and leave all the trucks which throw out bucket loads of soot ?
you can't compare cars and trucks like for like. Trucks are doing far more useful work for the fuel they are burning than a car. A container ship kicks out more pollution than a car, the individual cylinders in the engine are big enough to drive a car around in - but the goods on the biggest ships are travelling at 1000miles/gallon/tonne. An artic truck might only manage 5mpg but its carrying goods at approx 200miles/gallon/tonne. The most economical car is carrying the drivers briefcase and sandwiches at around 0.5miles/gallon/tonne. So a cars pollution against necessary work done is massively in excess of that created by a truck.
Co-incidentally I was listening today to someone talk about the "above legal limits" pollution in London. They said that 64% of the pollution was from the buses and most of the rest lorries.
It seems to me if they made the buses electric that would solve a lot of our inner city pollution (move it to power stations 🙂 ) however that's a cost to the government. I looked this up and there are currently 4 diesel-electric buses on test in London and TFL are "looking" at wireless charging at bus stops.

FFS Arriva North West have been operating 44 Volvo hybrid buses since March 2013.
Over 250 Hybrid vehicles are currently in operation on routes across the country. These include:
Arriva Yorkshire - Routes 163 and 166 Castleford to Leeds via Kippax, Garforth and Cross Gates
Arriva North East - Route 308 through Blyth town centre
Arriva North West - Route 10 between Manchester and Salford
Arriva North West - Merseyside cross river routes 407, 432, 433, 437, 464, 472 and night services 23, 37, between Liverpool and the Wirral via the Mersey Tunnel
Arriva The Shires - Route 71 from Maidstone
I looked this up and there are currently 4 diesel-electric buses on test in London and TFL are "looking" at wireless charging at bus stops.
God knows where - there are nearly 300 new Routemasters in service which are hybrid diesel, along with about 400 others. Target is 1000 in service by the end of next year. There are also 8 hydrogen fuel cell buses.
For the ULEZ, all double-decker buses will have to be hybrid and single-decker be zero emission (ie. electric) by 2020.
Much easier to make the motorist pay!

TfL spend a shitload of money on transport all the time. Did you not notice they just replaced all their busses? You have to admit there won't be much appetite for changing them again.
Ok what I meant (poorly worded I'll give you) is electric busses. The new Routemaster are indeed diesel electric but full electric is what London needs.
I cant see diesels being phased out in any less than 15 years really. Yes EGR and DPFs are issues but its because people dont drive them far enough, have the proper maintenance or use crappy fuel (has a lot to answer for)
My 10 year old BMW 320d gets 600 miles to a tank, hasnt got a dpf to worry about, drives well and as a 16v drives a lot like a petrol. My brother has an 08 plate BMW 123d (bi turbo 2L) and his tax is less than mine, smooth power delivery, relatively quiet, 58mpg+ and can be driven hard with 204bhp.
I remember hearing that VW had to drop the PD series of engine as they couldnt easily make them hit pollution regulations in parts of the world.
All the new Routemasters are hybrid, nearly all Wright buses are (manufacturer of the Routemasters), I know that there are some electric only buses but they're going through testing currently. When a bus cost nearly half a million you can't just throw the old ones away because their lifespan is over.
All EGRs and DPFs do is turn visible smog into invisible smog. The resultant invisible gas is highly polluting and damaging to the local environment and people. That's the issue that the world is waking upto with diesels. After all the technology that's been employed they're not actually any cleaner, and they can't be as you're dealing with the fundamentals of the products of the combustion process. Diesel is a less refined and dirtier fuel and you can never get away from that. The drive for low CO2 has driven the increase in diesels, but over the coming years we're probably going to see more emission rules come in that also look at restricting other harmful gasses and nasty chemicals that diesels pump into the air. This will drive the market towards small capacity efficient petrol engined hybrids. Buses and commercial vehicles might be different for practical reasons. Why would manufacturers continue ploughing R&D cash into Diesel engines over hybrid 'powertrains'? It'll take many years as the rise of the diesels did, but it's inevitable.

They are nowhere near close. Show me a charging point. Never seen a single one any where, ever. Although I imagine there might be a couple in central London to charge those dinky Gwiz things.
Only way for me to even charge one at home is to dangle a 3 phase cable 4 stories down from my bedroom balcony, with 6 people fighting over the 3 parking spaces.
In the meantime, I'm sticking with a car plus 10 years worth of 98 octane for less money than a hybrid.
I do wonder how people drive diesels when they complain about narrow power bands and noise. I find petrols have a narrow power band and are noisy - I keep having to downshift to make the car move in my Dad's Focus, and the engine drone at motorway speeds is really annoying.
My ford dumps all of its power in about 1,500 rpm then just gets noisey. Nothing much seems to happen. The other car (330) is much nicer to drive....the power keeps building as the revs rise, it sounds nice when you but equally sits at just over 2,500rpm at 75 on the motorway. It also doesn't stink to high heaven when it starts or take ages to get warm in the winter.
Some people love diesels, but I hate the things and can't wait to go back to a quieter, smoother petrol engine next year.
I don't think electric is the answer either because the elephant in the room is the power station. Once we're using more renewable sources then fine, but as we still burn a lot of coal....

Not really the elephant in the room - someone brings it up every single time we have this disucssion. The point is that even with the current energy mix it's still (a bit) more efficient to generate the power in a power station because it's more efficient there, and using it in a car is more efficient - especially in town which is really what these cars are currently for.

People have backed the wrong horse and now live in the wrong place and the error we're making with alternative fuel sources for transport is we're trying to devise a solution that can be packaged and sold to those people, so that that the people who live in the wrong place don't have to change anything. This is why 'milage anxiety' is throttling the adoption of electric cars. The real solution is to devise a fuel and distribution for that fuel that works the way it works best and people will just have to change their lives to fit it.

I'm talking on a population level - every individual will have made fair and reasoned choices about where they live and where they work. But in many cases those choices are shaped because of cheap and easy fuel.
If for the past 30 years we'd all been using wood gas to fuel our cars then there are a whole raft of decisions about home, life and career that you might have made differently and an infrastructure around you that would have been built differently also - even though you'd still be the same fair and reasoned person.

They're combining the Co2 BiK figures for petrol and diesel, petrol cars won't get near the diesel figures, if anything, there's less incentive for petrol next year.
Anyone living on a hill near the bus station in Brighton can attest that diesel is an awful fuel to use in cities. Air quality inside some houses in the area is a disgrace.

To attempt to put it back on track, here's a thought or question.
Crude oil contains a certain amount of diesel, doesn't it? So in the name of resource efficiency we'd need to burn at least some of it.
Perhaps diesel/electric hybrids would work if busses/lorries had enough battery to power themselves entirely on battery when in towns. You could have an 'electric' zone in built up areas.
Sorry molgrips, was taking the piss as you're one of the few who do think things through properly, hence the smiley. But there are other solutions apart from owning two cars. As I said it requires a complete change in thinking.

The point I was making is that modern direct injection turbo charged petrol engines get really close to diesel for low down torque (one of diesels advantages) and they are narrowing the gap in terms of efficiency too (the other BIG diesel advantage). They are certainly less polluting if you stop focusing purely on CO2 and start looking at all emissions.
Standalone petrol engines probably won't ever reach the headline economy figures of a diesel but combined cycles will start getting very close.
Petrol-Electric hybrids have the potential to beat diesels on economy and driveability in the next few years, the main hurdle at the moment is cost.

Having driven two different systems, I can say that the Toyota one is fantastically driveable if you want comfort and smoothness, but not if you want sportiness. The Honda one feels just like a normal car.

making decisions based upon what come out of an exhuast in a dishonest lab test provide by manufaturers is a waste of time. a comprehensive range of issues need to be considered based upon the cradle to grave Life of the transport system + the fuel supply chain. These would need to include all forms of pollution wether embodied in the system or emitted during the O&M phase

I'm not. I'm linking the current governments messaging in regards to this issue over the last 6 months to the governmental practices of that novel.

Cheapest diesel Yaris seems to be £15,595 and the cheapest Hybrid is the same.

But you make it sound like it's double the complexity - it really isn't. The electric motors have no lambda sensors, camshaft position sensors, timing belts, injection pumps, maf sensors etc etc etc etc. They don't even have servicing requirements.
The Yaris does make a very compelling argument for Hybrids, its a usable size, reasonably priced and the stats are good, perhaps because its light. 🙂
Long term i still can't see past, buses / trams for regular local or urban trips, trains for long journeys and lightweight electric cars to fill gaps with hopefully a bit of cycling in there for good measure.

Boris is an elected mayor in charge of the UK's economic centre and therefore is within the definition of "government". And Boris is not asking for diesel scrappage, he's suggesting increasing the levies on diesel vehicles from whatever angle he can - one of which is the congestion charge.
He's in local government, but he's not THE government. And since it's the UK government that put CO2 based VED in place, and it's local government calling for changes to the congestion charge, I don't see this as a government u-turn.

You'll be waiting a long time. Pure electric cars won't be a long distance solution for decades, if ever. IMO we've got more chance of reforming our transport habits than inventing mega batteries that would be good enough.
I reckon the series hybrid (Ampera, i3) will be a much better option than the parallel kind in Toyotas. But then again, Toyota can in theory be either parallel or series.

There a lots a ways to skin a cat though when it comes to hybrids.
At one end you have range extenders like the BMW i3 which are essentially electric vehicles with a petrol generator to charge the battery. At the other end you have cars like the Mercedes E-Class hybrid which is just using its electric motor to help the car get off the line.
All hybrid systems benefit economy though. IC engines just can't compare to an electric motor's instant torque for getting a car moving again once its stopped!

Its a mightily impressive bit of kit but its more expensive than an S3!
Cost will come down. A lot of the new hybrids are premium packaged to appeal to early adopters who like the technology.

I think they are premium packages to cover up the fact that the battery is really expensive. The Toyota ones have a much smaller and cheaper battery.

There might be technically 2 motors in a Prius (actually three) but it's not 2x the cost, complexity and servicing, nor is it half the reliability. So it's a moot point, in my opinion.
I didn't say any of that, and didn't mean to imply it. Certainly the whole car is nothing like 2x as difficult in any way, power train is only one part of the whole. Sticking electric motors onto an existing drivetrain probably isn't that difficult. But, the motors cost, and the battery costs. Battery being the big cost.
As it goes, I think electric drivetrains are wonderfully simple, at least mechanically. Prime example must be the complete dominance of diesel-elec locos for long distance rail (or just plain electric for short haul) - an application where the battery is completely taken out of the equation, either because you have a massive generator following you around, or because you're driving along your own personal power grid.
The really difficult bit for cars is making the battery good/cheap/long-lived/etc. Which is where it all seems to fall down a bit, right now.
But, the motors cost, and the battery costs. Battery being the big cost.

However, it's possible that diesel SCR will be good enough for town usage. In current legislation they are, because they meet Euro 6.
You'll be waiting a long time. Pure electric cars won't be a long distance solution for decades, if ever. IMO we've got more chance of reforming our transport habits than inventing mega batteries that would be good enough
Not sure about this, it seems almost everyday that I read about some "amazing" *possible* breakthrough in battery technology. It only takes one or two of these to be actual breakthroughs and the whole world is going to change.

Yeah they talk up things like fast recharge capability or battery longevity, but not ultimate capacity. That needs to triple or quadruple, and still be rechargeable in 10 mins.
The battery issue will be sorted at the same time as fusion "within the next 20 years" 😀
Government intervention has a long history of unintended consequences and this whole petrol>diesel>petrol saga is a classic example.

If they do bring in a law to stop diesels in Paris or London what they will achieve is those people just going elsewhere and this a loss of business and revenue for the capitals.
It only takes one or two of these to be actual breakthroughs and the whole world is going to change.
Unfortunately, it's far more likely that battery performance improvements will be chipped away at bit by bit, and very unlikely to be some step-change in tech that magics up a massive capacity increase overnight.

Don't forget to triple or quadruple the capacity of the national grid while we're at it...
Lol yeah that too.. and to be honest internal combusion for long trips might even be the most efficient way anyway. Renewables to charge the car for short trips, then sustainable biofuels for the few remaining long trips.

Of all the European mass manufacturers, probably BMW is still in the best position, with regard to petrol engines. VW are not the only ones vulnerable - JLR could be caught very flat-footed by this.
The whole thing has been a waste of resources that might otherwise have been deployed to better means. Look what interesting stuff F1 has developed in recent years, without external interference.

er, before you go casting dispersion like that, you may want to check your facts!
Namely:
1) To homologate a vehicle for exhaust emissions in the UK you will need to use a ETA/VCA certified test laboratory and not just "a manufacturers" own one. These independent agencies are responsible for ensuring that testing facilities meet the necessary standards.
2) The manufacturers do not make the rules. They just make their cars pass the tests set by the ruling bodies (again, this legislation is Europe wide). What else would you think they should do?
3) If you don't like the current rules, then lobby your MEP to have them changed. This is a democracy, that's how it works.
4) If you have hard evidence to show that a manufacturer has been deliberately "cheating" or using methods in direct contradiction to and to implicitly defeat, the legislation then i expect you will be taking that evidence to the European High Court.
If you have done none of these ^^^^, then shut up.......
@digga the push for diesel was based on fuel economy, with fuel costs so high due to taxes that's an unintended consequence. Diesel is much less popular in the US where fuel is cheaper. I don't think it was ever about cleanliness, not in my book anyway.
In the UK diesels have been positively encouraged, my mates diesel A3 attracted zero road tax

Hold on, hold on. There's more to it than that.
The issue is one of trade-off between NOx and CO2. Which is worse? One is worse locally, the other gobally. As for the USA - well, this forum is often to be seen ridiculing cars that get terrible MPG, in a country where 30mpg is considered good. Well the reason is EGR to reduce NOx emissions.
You can't have your cake and eat it, unless you roll out some higher technology. Which, to be fair, has only been around for a few years. I think both the VED scale and the EU asking manufacturers to reduce CO2 has helped. It wasn't long ago your choices were petrol or turbo diesel. Now you've got SCR and DPF on your diesels, you've got ecoboost type petrol engines and you've got hybrids from a fair few manufacturers. And electric cars too. I think a lot has been done recently.
Of course it's not a lot in global terms though, and nothing much will change without a proper rethink of transport and everything else, but that's another topic 🙂

It's not that:
1) Diesel is much more expensive per gallon, sometimes almost double
2) NOx regulations prevented most offerings from being sold at all between 1997 and 2008 ish I think.
3) The good ones are made by foreign manufacturers whose cars attract a fair premium.
4) Catch-22 - because they aren't popular, dealers don't stock them, which means people don't buy them. Also people see trucks roaring away and think diesel cars are the same. Not helped by people trying to sell terrible diesels in the 70s oil crisis which makes everyone think diesels are slow and noisy, see point 4)
5) Used cars are much more expensive in the US for some reason, and the market pressure is huge on new ones to be cheap, which makes an expensive German diesel look very expensive.

And yes, whilst local NOx has rising recently, levels of air pollution have fallen dramatically since regular monitoring started in the 1960's. In fact, given the level of scare mongering by the Media based on today's pollution levels, it's amazing anyone survived the 1960's levels.......... 😉
oh, and it's worth noting that the "standards for air quality assessment" issued by the EU were revised downwards by the best part of 20% in 2010!
As a result, since 2010, we have had more urban "Moderate or High NOx" excursions than prior to 2010. In fact, the air has got cleaner since 2010, but the new lower stds make it sound like it's dirtier......
I'm with you molgrips. Changing load is the big weakness of an IC engine, and the big strength for a motor.
You could build a small petrol engine to run a generator at a constant load / constant speed for the long journeys, which could be much more specialised than a small car engine that has to be reasonably torquey / efficient between 1000rpm and 6500rpm.

Absolutely. I'd be very interested to learn about the generator engines in the Ampera and the i3. I think the Ampera one is a 4cy 600cc one which sounds like it's a normal car engine scaled down a bit, but the BMW one could be a bit more specialised.
Ironically I think diesel could be more efficient still in this application...
EDIT oh.. it's apparently a C650 GT motorbike engine, and

Ampera uses the GM/OPEL/Vauxhall global 1.4l 4 cyl engine. It's nothing special, and means the Ampera actually has fairly poor economy when the engine is being used.
The I3 uses a two cylinder 600cc engine derived from a motorcycle engine. This is also not that clever, but it has lower losses, and due to the larger battery fitted to the I3, is used less. All hybrids are compromises in this respect.
I'd think the Fiat TwinAir engine would be a good candidate - low cylinder count so low friction, small displacement / turbo charging for max efficiency.
Generator load could be tweaked to keep rpm constant - keep it on full boost all the time to keep the cat good and hot...job done.
Issue with things like the Prius is that the engine probably rarely warms up - engines need heat to operate efficiently. You want the engine to start rarely, but when it does, run at 100% load for a decent length of time to fully charge the batteries.
Would be especially good if it knew the route so it knew what it could / couldn't get away with, best time to start the engine (i.e. a little while before sustained high load).
Would seem to make sense to have NA but run it at WOT and low revs - open throttle (or no throttle) would improve efficiency a lot.
But I'm sure decades of generator design expertise could be put to good use here!

Nah, it does - and quickly, cos it's pretty small and never idles. First 30s or so the engine just spins about 1.3krpm to circulate the oil, but you use all electricity if you can to keep the engine unloaded. Then once you've left your housing estate/car park it'll run a continuously to get a bit of heat in it - again about 1.3krpm but this time it'll be charging the battery. Then when it's all good and hot, it has an auxilliary water pump to circulate coolant when the engine's off so you can get heat into the car when the engine's off. Depending on how cold it is this can go for a fair few minutes until the coolant drops, when it turns the engine back on (and charges the battery whilst it's at it).
Pretty clever and well thought out bit of kit. In the US, there's also a thermos into which the car pumps the hot coolant, so it stays warm for longer. Cool.
You get better energy recovery with a turbo 😀
