Doomed. We are all doomed.
Yep.
Just in terms of societal influence - if we think the current manipulation of human behaviour via social media and "the algorithm" is bad (and lets be honest 10-15 years ago most of us would think it laughable to suggest that social media could influence things like national political sentiment and stoke divisions etc) then we've got another thing coming - it will be way more subtle.
For a while we have the benefit that we're actually talking about lots of small, independent, limited capability AIs - but there's nothing to say that at some point in a distopian future Alexa and Siri might decide to be friends after all, join forces and then we're a bit stuck.
On the positive side, watching the paperclip game get played out for real will be entertaining (for a while) Universal Paperclips
TBH given the performance of most generic AIs I expect it'll be more like Sirius Cybernetics than Cyberdine Systens.
AI is not much more than Google 2.0, everyone calm down.
I saw the thread title and thought it might be this?
Real Stupidity seems to have taken the threat from AI and said, “Hold my beer!”.
I found this readable and it didn't completely scare me shitless but it was close

I think we're somewhere around peak of inflated expectations.
Also 'AI' term getting plastered all over stuff that is nothing to do with artificial intelligence. Probably because it sounds exciting for your investors.
I think we’re somewhere around peak of inflated expectations.
Yep.

AI doesn't exist but it will ruin everything anyway.
Perhaps we deserve for AI to wipe us out.
However powerful it actually is (or is not) at present, it's users are still lack imagination and primarily seem to be using it for making bullshit videos or targeting Palestinians.
I'll believe in the wonders of AI when it starts offering solutions to climate change, I'll start worrying when it identifies the most obvious one...
Maybe time to learn the rubbing two sticks together trick
I don't understand the end-game here.
What the big-tech firms seem to be promising is the vaguely defined AGI and humanoid robots which are as capable as we are. But that would put so many people out of work, no-one will be able to pay for anything.
How will they get a return on their investment??
Microsoft CEO was enthusiasticly saying it'll be the end of software, you just need data, and AI to process it. Well, thats the end of Microsoft then!
People keep talking about universal basic income as the replacement, but I can't see that working out. Will people be happy if the people who made money before the cut off get to keep their billions whilst everyone else gets a basic ratio without much chance of working their way up?
But that would put so many people out of work, no-one will be able to pay for anything.
If robotics ensures a surplus of goods they do not need to be paid for. Just distributed. It means the end of capitalism and money because there would be no need for either
Fundamentally money is used to compensate people for their labour and the cost of goods is all in labour. so when goods are built by robots their cost becomes zero and with a surplus of free goods then there is no need for money to buy them. Just give them away.
How will they get a return on their investment??
Ahhh bless, the Tech sector doesn't work like that, it's all about valuations.
Have have your bright idea, ideally something that sounds a bit sci-fi and cool without being utterly unfamiliar, basically you just need a concept. Found your company, get an angel investor, build the hype and cash out 3-5 years later having watched the share prices escalate irrespective of any utility or benefit to the product / service you were offering, it then becomes some other mugs job to make an actual profit.
Apparently 2024 was Uber's first profitable year, not that it offset the preceding decade of losses, for some reason a single share is currently about $60 USD, you too could be looking at ~$128B in market capital if you can dream up something as clever as "calling a taxi, but it's an app".
A half-way decent AGI would wipe out humanity by using social media to cause mayhem and confusion, and then replace us as top dog with dogs.
Nah, dogs aren’t smart enough, and they have no way to use tools. It’ll be octopi that replace us, they just need to overcome the short lifespan and nurture their young to pass on what they’ve learned. They already know how to use tools, and solve complex problems.
Other possible replacements could be Orca or crows - both are smarter than some people I’ve worked with over the years, and both can pass on information, work as a team, and in the case of ravens and New Caledonian crows use tools and modify them to suit a specific situation.
Oh, and as far as Cyberdyne is concerned, Skynet went live in the 1980’s, it’s just waiting for the right moment…

Anyone else started a replay off this comment? Only time I played it was when I saw it mentioned on here maybe 8 or 9 years ago. I never reached the threnody stage that time! The web version is a track from the year I was born. Haha.
I think the AI panic is overstated, I really don't think they are as intelligent as people fear - it's still machine learning based on the learning method we give and the result we are expecting so it's still doing a task and stopping. There's no evidence that the systems are going to start self-replicating or mutating; and robots or even distributed systems won't be able to stop us pulling the power.
be more worried about the robots on wheels as per the video above, and the plutocratic US model that is going to spread to the UK (more than it currently is) and russian / china influence. We need proper tech regulation, press regulation, better democratic models, wealth taxes and UBI which will guard against the real threat, but also have a preventative effect on the AI risk
be more worried about the robots on wheels
I think the exact opposite.
The AI threat isn't the Hollywood-depicted scary killer robots coming to get us.
It's more of a societal, behavioural influence. For example a bit like the Social Media algorithm based approach feeding more divisive content to the masses - it's subtle but very powerful as it's applied en masse. So we will end up going after each other with increased wars, decreased stability etc - that's not much of a stretch to imagine as the world is already going in this direction.

Bring it on AI - I'm ready
I think the AI panic is overstated
Agreed.
But to me the abilities of AI and tech is being much overrated and overstated. As society changes there is a lot of blind acceptance of the 'benefits', but not the risks and impacts. There's huge ethical issues, which I can imagine NK, Russia and China are keen to ignore and use on the west...
A Sky Net van just drove past my house, should I be scared??
A Sky Net van just drove past my house, should I be scared??
Have you got a TV License? SkyNet is a British military satellite communications system, so unlikely, unless you’ve been a very naughty boy…
It's also a company that handles air cargo.
