Am I likely to have seen a small barracuda whilst snorkeling off the coast of Slovenia? Only mebbe 20 metres from shore, hard to tell size but maybe a couple of feet long, long very thin body (the fish, not me)? Any ichthyologists in the house who can say what else it might have been?
Garfish
They do live in the Mediterranean apparently. I don't think they're dangerous to humans outside of rare incidents?
I remember seeing some while swimming on a boat trip around the coast of Lanzarote.
Garfish
Don't recall it having the long, thin, pointy gob - I thought blunter and undershot, but I freely accept that might be my imagination, having looked at pictures of barracudas since.
Prebbebly not.

I've dived with them a few times. They like shiny things so follow divers around.
Are they dangerous to humans? Not in my experience. Should they be treated with respect? Absolutely. They are reasonably large "ferocious, opportunistic predators."

I've also been followed by them when diving (in the Red Sea). I reckon anything with that many teeth and that small a brain should be given all due respect.
Some species grow quite large (up to 65 inches or 165 cm in length),[4] such as <i>Sphyraena sphyraena</i>, found in the Mediterranean Sea and eastern Atlantic
...from Wikipedia. They’re fairly unmistakable when you see them, as least that’s what I find. The ones I’ve seen were loitering around piers and reefs.
I've seen them a few times diving in Spain, they're lovely looking fish.
Baby Great White Shark. 😉
Strictly speaking the Slovenian coast is on the Adriatic...😉
I saw a few yellow finned barracuda snorkelling off Menorca last year.
I've seen barracuda diving in Malta, so I don't see why not.
They aren't the giant (60-100cm) ones you see in Blue Planet though, just the European (40-50cm) version

Nice try, but the Adriatic is part of the Med according to the International Hydrographic Organization responsible for defining this kind of thing.
Pages 16-17,
I reckon you did.
I've seen 'em in a <span style="font-size: 12.8px;">canal near Wakefield so they'll probably be right at home in the Med</span>
