We went for a wander round Roughlee, Barley and Newchurch yesterday to look at all of the witchy stuff for Halloween and I got talking to the lady who lives there. It is now a rather flash looking 3 bed house, but I remember going in the late 70s when it was a hostel for the Scout movement.

I went 3 or 4 times, usually in the last week of October. A load of 10 year old kids staying in Alice Nutter’s house on Halloween! It was fantastic.

Did anyone else ever stay there?

My god, there's a blast from the past. Yep, been there/done that many many years ago.

Lived in Newchurch for years as a kid. Next house up the hill from the witches shop.

Do you mean Whitehough? Stayed a few times in the 60s.

Ecky, I bet you never had a set of roller skates!

My daughters love seeing the Alice statue when we go to visit the inlaws at the B&B just up the road. We always have to stop so they can say 'hello' 🙂

Roughlee Old Hall.

The hostel was in the gabled bit on the right hand end.

Whitehough is in Barley and is still an activity centre.

No it's not Whitehough, but yep stayed there too though (from school).

Harry, no rollerscates - just a bike 🙂 ... mates lived in places like Barley & Higham and I had to get there on my bike. I often cursed my dad for buying a house 1000 feet up on a hill, and steep whichever direction you were coming from.

Remember 'Woodsmoke', the old chap prom the provisional wing of the Scouts who was the warden there for years?
Happy days.

Walked round there a lot this year as Sue was doing her DoE assessment at Whithough.
Took me a while to recognise the old place.

Part of our regular road circuit now.

Whitehough has just been sold off due to cuts.
Last I heard Burnley FC had put a decent bid in, planning to turn it into some sort of activity place.

“Woodsmoke”. We used to cheekily call him “Fagash”, but not to his face.

🙂

We used to wind him up something wicked.
'You city kids know nothing about the countryside. Bet you don't even know where milk comes from!'
'Asda?'
