Mrs Doris is a keen artist and is mulling over getting a big iPad Pro with a pencil. But they're not cheap!
Her current workflow is to draw in pencil or ink, scan the drawing, then mangle it in Photoshop CC on a Mac mini. So you can see how the iPad/pencil thing might appeal. Would it fit neatly into this kind of workflow? Can you easily export high DPI drawing files and sync them across devices to import into Photoshop?
A friend of mine who is a painter and a little computer-phobic bought one and has been absolutely blown away by it.
He's just had an iPad-only exhibition.
I'm seeing him tonight so I'll ask a little about his workflow, although it might be purely on the iPad.

(He's also on the telly tonight on Sky Arts)
sounds good - would appreciate any thoughts!
that pic is lovely btw 🙂
The new Steadtler pen is meant to be far superior to the Apple version. No idea if it works with an iPad Pro though.

Sounded interesting so I just looked that up. Appears to be designed for Samsung products, doesn't look like it'll work on any ipads.
I just bought a Wacom tablet. Under 100 quid and offers a far cheaper way of integrating painting and drawing with the mac. And it’s good fun.

which isn't necessarily a problem, that could be an option too, except... the 12" Samsung Galaxy Book (256GB) is about £300 more than the 13" 256GB iPad Pro! What do you get for your extra money besides a keyboard and some USB slots?
Alex Simon. You might want to give your friend a heads up that the link to his site threw up a malware warning when I tried to visit. He might want to check that out.
Thanks muppetWrangler - I think it's the instant redirect (not sure why necessary), but I'll mention it.
I too have a large Wacom tablet. It isn't the same as seeing the drawing under the pen tip. I must admit to doing a lot of photo editing in Lightroom on the iPad, almost to the point of thinking about dumping my Macbook Air for editing and checking when out and about.
and the 256GB Surface Pro! It's 36% more expensive than the 256iPad Pro!
What's the deal? Are Windows machines now the choice for witless trustafarian fanbois* or is there something else to account for the price difference?
*etc etc and so on and so forth

Have you seen the surface studio price tag ??
What about the Wacom Cintiq 13HD Interactive Pen Display ?

Don't really know much, but i think the surface is a full bhoona computer, ie full windows 10 OS, and probably more powerful. I doubt they should be compared as like for like.
Wow, the tech we have at our individual disposal is awesome isn’t it.

It's quite amazing . My first experience of CAD was drawing a steel profile using coordinates on a BBC computer at college.
It's come a long way since then

pretty much, aye. 🙂 If we could transport the tech back just 30 years, they'd all think we were out of star trek! 😆
@alexsimon.. your friend on sky arts tonight.. on Landscape Artist ?
Also, tonight’s programme is all about the Tata Steel works on the South Gare in Redcar .. should be awesome.
I bloody love Johnathons work. He’s a top bloke too. Say hello from me, will you Alex
I didn’t realise he’d done those recent ones on a an iPad.
I’ve not used a tablet and pen for a while. It was a Wacom, and I didn’t really get on with it. I think i’m Going to have to give it another go
Jonathan’s on “Landscape...”
Wow, yer mate Jonathan won 😀
We use Surface Pros at work - I'm on my third as buggy hardware often crashes catastrophically. My ipad2 is still going 6 years later.
thanks for all the input. i suspect MrsDoris will suffer too-much-choice paralysis and not do anything for 6 months. But it's been very enlightening for me 😆
Due to much alcohol, I didn't get to ask him much about iPad work, as I was too busy looking through all his paintings and heckling at the telly.
But he only uses the iPad Pro and an iPhone. No computer.
Everything he does in in apps on there.

Yes! Tune in in a few weeks to see the next round!
The painting from the program was at his house last night - but we didn't see it until after the programme. The tv really doesn't do oil paint justice. Some of the close-ups helped, but it was interesting to see it after.
He was interested to see some of the deliberations, because they didn't get much feedback at the time.
That line his about the sky - "just bang it in" was classic!
Top cyclist too! Will do - didn't know you two knew each other! Small world.binners - MemberI bloody love Johnathons work. He’s a top bloke too. Say hello from me, will you Alex
Alex - We've met through a shared love of both mountain biking and illustration. He's considerably better than me at both! 🙂
I've just tried to dig out the BBC documentary on David Hockney but unfortunately its no longer available. Heres a bit of coverage on his Yorkshire landscapes, all produced on an ipad
and its worth following Johnathan on Instagram for more of his amazing work

how does ableton live or indesign run on your ipad? As I say not particularly comparable.
I know I've hijacked the thread somewhat, so apologies for that, but here's an interview with Jonathan about the Sky Arts thing:

Well, brilliant just brilliant.
TBH I’ve been a fan of the “Landscape..” programme and such is the variety of locations and artist applications it’s always been an interesting watch.
I will continue to watch it, be interesting to see how he progresses. His reaction was priceless.
Always a shame we don’t get to see the art in its natural environment, but it’s the only way we get to see thier interpretation of the task.
I know Redcar and the Tees reasonably well, I know the Gare very well and seeing the view back to the steel works is a spectacular view indeed. It’s worth the walk all along the beach to the huts if you get the opportunity, and you can walk along the access road back but you can’t drive it as it’s private land.
Re Surface Pro vs iPad pro - I'm confused re the comparison, they're very different things.
