Moving there soon, any good riding?
Schools ok etc?
Cheers
I've nothing to offer to the thread beyond life.
At the moment you need to reply top your thread so it shows in the listing.
Yes. Eston Moor, trails round Guisborough and Great Ayton, Roseberry Topping including a small but fun trail centre and then over into the NY Moors. Should ride there more than I do. Dunno so much about real life stuff like schools etc (weekender with a place down the coast aways) but Salty was feeling to be on the up pre covid with cafes shops etc. Not a vast number of options but a fun night out.
Saltburn is lovely.
Guisborough for gnarly loamy stuff with odd trails scattered over the other side of the hill and around captain cooks. MTB-Guisborough is the local club that do the digging.
Bikescene for parts.
There's also Hamsterley for more managed trails and another hillside on the way down to Thirsk (began with an S, something Bank?) with lots of DH trails.
The moors go on for miles if map reading and Xc are your thing.
Road riding is OK, but the low density of roads over the moors makes route choice tricky. There's not the same sort of network of back lanes you find in other places, it's mostly real roads and can get busy on bank holidays.
Schools, no idea. There was a big hoo haa while I lived there about the local secondary in Guisborough being condemned by Ofsted.
I used to live in saltburn, it’s really lovely, loads of brilliant riding nearby, errington woods is about 15 mins cycle away with some great trails.
Guisbourough woods and N York moors have tons of trails, the best ones are ‘cheeky’ so you need to know where they are but join guisborough mtb Facebook site and you’ll be pointed in the right direction.
Hamsterley is about an hour away, lakes, hour and a half if the traffics ok.
You’ll love it, wish I still lived there!

Sutton Bank, and if Hamsterley's in well Swaledale ain't that far. Check round Great Fryup to find NYM aren't all xc. Though there's a lot of gravel tracks too if that's your thing.
Life's a beach in Saltburn, except it's always busy since lockdowns became a thing. Normally you have it to yourself all winter.
Biking on the Moors is good, for road biking head West unless you are a hill monster. The lanes from Ayton lead out across to the Dales and beyond with low traffic. Lots of locals go for evening rides on the trails in New Marske Woods, ten minutes ride away so no car just a nice warm up (I think Danny Hart was filmed there earlier this year. I think he's Redcar based). Note locally Marske and Redcar have a short a and silent r when talking.
Saltburn has plenty of good local shops cafes and pubs. Also friendly for incomers like myself.
Only one school in Saltburn so it's a bit what you see is what you get. It's OK but schools are a mixed bag and one person's great is another's terrible so read the Ofsted and see. The secondary in Marske is under Outwood academy and you wouldn't wish the way they treat kids on a mangy dog. Saltburn and Guisborough secondaries have only just become academies but are under a local chain run from Egglescliffe which is one of the best schools on Teesside.
Just remember Teesside always has a double e and double s and you'll be fine 🙂
Riding: loads, absolutely loads. Guisborough, Errington, NY Moors, Dalby, Hamsterley etc.
Schools: yep, we have them. Not much choice really, and no idea how good/bad they are
Surfing is better!! If you do move to Saltburn you should really take up surfing, pretty much the perfect place to learn.
Lived in the area for the last 30 years (about 10 miles south), went to the secondary school in Saltburn before it became an Academy. Supposed to be decent now but while I was there it was shite but this was 20 years ago.
Decent riding to be had (apparently, I wouldn't know as I'm shit at riding and don't even own a mountain bike anymore) on the moors and around Guisborough woods. Dalby not too far away either. Check out places like Yorkshire Cycle Hub, Bikescene and Westbrooks for bikes and parts. Cycle Hub has an amazing cafe attached to it and they do a lot of events/group rides et. Loads of videos on Youtube showing some of the riding in the area.
Road riding is good if you can get away from the busy main roads and onto some of the quieter lanes on the moors. Some gravel stuff to explore too (fire roads etc). Gets busy with tourist traffic further down the coast and Saltburn has become more popular in the last few years with daytrippers from Middlesbrough and tourists staying in Whitby.
