So, still dragging on with my dodgy tooth that despite many (costly) visits and x-rays they couldn't see anything wrong, then were suggesting sinus issues, then suggested doing root canal, then the pain went away so they held off on the root canal and not been a problem for months.

Anyway, after hygienist & check up last week, now it's flared up and bit of pain on biting down, and feels like something has shifted as tooth feels different.

With use of a camera, I've taken a look for myself. Cracked tooth surely? Or cracked filling. The tooth has a white filling, which was redone couple years back as they claimed it was cracked despite not having issues. I'm suspecting all this stemmed from that refill anyway.

Booked in to have it looked at anyway, so that's more money.

Warning now... ugly teeth photo. Tooth is second from back molar, noting wisdom tooth has been removed. Sometimes it looks more obvious than others.

Sorry

Yep looks split mesial-distal. (Thanks for the ability to zoom being returned btw). In your dentist and anyone else who's looked it's defence these things are notoriously difficult to diagnose until this happens. Also, you're unlucky as only 20% end up like this usually. More often than not a corner breaks off and can be repaired. I suspect that will need the healing forceps. Sorry.

Thanks, that makes sense. Early on (was on earlier thread I posted maybe) there was something I read about difficulty spotting this and did wonder. Had about 4 x-rays over the period and not one showed it up.

If pulling the tooth is the answer then that'll do. Rear tooth, I'm not that fussed about. Did ask dentist if that's the easy option earlier on, but they were reluctant to do it. Risk to other teeth or something.

The problem is that you often can't tell exactly which tooth it is. If you start down the process of elimination, well.....y'know. An X-ray would only show it if the crack happened to be in the line of the X-ray and yours is at 90 degrees to it. Even a CBCT, which is like a mini ct scan and gives a 3D image, wouldn't show it definitely probably until it's in the state yours is in now.

I meant to say before that there's nothing ugly about your teeth btw. They look good to me đŸ™‚

Ha, just found the original post five months ago where I said:

10p it’s a cracked tooth somewhere.

😎 I'll take PayPal.

grrrr....teeth. I was in this week also with pain on biting - if I get a seed or something between the teeth it's really sharp which then disappears after an hour or two. Also apparently a crack but it's been suggested to me that I have an overlay (or onlay?) fitted, which will seal it off and stop the crack flexing. Is that an option for you?

Too late for that one ^^^

It may work for you. My experience is that it may slow the progress of a crack but doesn't stop it spreading and, as said before, the progress is unpredictable. Flexing of the cracked bit is what causes the pain though and in deadkenny's case it's caused the nerve to die. I've put an onlay on one of my wife's teeth and it seems to have helped with the crack symptoms.

@paul4stones - Definitely cracked, tooth pulled now. I subtract a 10p handling fee to pay 10p though đŸ˜€

Pulled it last Thur afternoon, so pretty much a week later. Still getting some aches after the initial pain following extraction. Not bad just on swallowing some times. Occasionally enough annoyance to pop a ibuprofen but don't need more than one a day or every couple of days.

Unlikely to be dry socket as from what I read that'll be way more painful?

At the moment there's a big old hole there. Can't easily see it to see the clot or absence of one. Been reading that it could take weeks for a large extraction to heal up though?

I had one out (my first) last year and while the skin has healed over after about 2 weeks, I still have a dent where the tooth was.
