I've woken up resembling the Elephant Man due to ongoing toothache, some sort of infection or abscess. Had to resort to quaffing painkillers every 3 hours. One side of face aches, as does glands, as does behind the eye.

As my face is swollen on one side, with mouth lop-sided, is it safe to ice? Also what is the best painkiller to take?

Thanks. 🙂

emergency dentist? Go see a professional for either a proper fix or proper drugs

C-g...
Hope you're feeling OK!

Pain relief is one thing, but it would be worthwhile seeing the ooh Dr or dentist as it sounds like antibiotics might be needed....

Best of luck!

Gp will just send you to an emergency dentist, they are quite good at the emergency dentist, they will give you antibiotics as they can't work on you Untill the swelling goes down anyway,I've had an abcess since Boxing Day and I've just undergone a root canal but this hasn't worked so I'll have to have a trip to the hospital.
Paracetamol and then ibuprofen two hours later,I feel your pain......literally.

Have you tried putting some cotton wool soaked in vodka in the other cheek?

It won't help with the pain much, but it's fun and you'll look less lopsided.

🙂

Fairly sure your local NHS Out of Hours service should be able to direct you to the emergency dentist.

GP may not be much help; ABx might treat the infection but if it needs draining they can't help.

This sounds like a fun game to play, what spirit soaked cotton wool do you have on your left side

abcess - which is what it sounds like at best guess - will need metronidazol (is that the same as ABX above) which will rule out alcohol for a bit.. They should be able to dish it out straight away if you convince them enough. I was on holiday in Aviemore, got a dental flare up, GP saw me after shutting time and was very good about dishing out what I reckoned I needed..

brufen probably best, swap it with paracetamol for best effect. When I got an abcess on skiing holiday, returned to see my tame dentist under emergency appt, his first question was had I taken painkillers, I said yes, paracetamol, he said he meat the real stuff i.e. whisky (which I had, as well, probably only time I've had whisky with my cornflakes...)

Out of hours dentist for sure. Search online and/or call NHS number. Might have a bit of a drive, but worth it.

Just come off taking metronidazole for a dental infection...horrible stuff. I waited 48hours after last tablet and alcoholic drinks taste disgusting. I always thought that not drinking on antibiotics was BS, but with metronidazole, it's a match made in hell.

Sorted the infection though 🙂 I spent a lot of time researching if I could have a drink less than 48hours after finishing, and having waited over 50, I'm very, very glad I didn't chance it.

Hope you and your mouth feel better soon CG 🙂

Last time I had a tooth infection, the dentist have me this advice: Take a cupful of boiled water with a teaspoon of salt, as hot as you can stand it, take a mouthful and hold it in your mouth on the side of the abscess. Repeat a few times a day.

Vickypeas advice ok
Painkillers ibuprofen as first choice supplemented by paracetamol if necessary. Check you have no contraindications to either.
Check out of hours in your area, you may get to phone an out of hours centre who may see you or will be able to fax a prescription for antibiotics to your local pharmacy.

In terms of antibiotics amoxicillin as first choice metronidazole as second choice.

Alcohol - May interfere with absorption of antibiotic meaning it doesn't work as well. Metronidazole is different, it has a similar reaction to antabuse which is given to alcoholics and will make you very sick.

Thanks very much for all the replies. I've managed to get an appointment with my own dentist this week, I trust him and not prepared to see anyone else.

Using salt is a good idea, will give that a go. Now quite used to dribbling. 😳

Bloomin' nuisance being able to buy only one pack of painkillers at a time.

Depends on a lot of things. Personally, I would avoid driving on something like that, but IANAD.

Your own dentist won't see you immediately when you're in so much pain?
Change your dentist dear.

Emergency dentists are that, for emergencies (facial injuries etc) not really for toothache/swelling.

Keep taking the pain relief (follow instructions, do not OD)

It's not nice but only thing you can do is sit and wait to be seen by your normal dentist
