Is £280 a reasonable price for this or should I wait for it to actually be on offer.

i had one for about 5 years . made ok coffee. but in the end i sent it back to repair twice due to the same fault where it wouldn't clear a puck due to a plastic lever arm breaking off.

Ended up replacing it with a Jura E8 an have not looked back

MAgnifica S was a Good gateway machine.

Camelcamelcamel report it as being a good price, cheapest it’s bean for 3 years or so.

Depends which model,  I have one of the all-singing-all-dancing ones that normally costs about £800.  I got it for £250ish from the official Delonghi 'seconds' store on ebay (it had a tiny and barely visible scratch) so that's worth checking out if you are budget conscious.

As a more general answer about Magnifica machines, yes as long as you're not expecting James Hoffman-tier coffee, I think they are generally good devices, and with some care make a reasonable drink with minimal effort.

If you search youtube, you will see that many models can have the delivery amounts etc reprogrammed for each button so you can fairly easily get them to make a decent, strong shot of espresso.

I’ve had that model since Feb ‘21. Makes a nice coffee, not had any issues with it. Think I paid about £300.

I have had a few of these - they are a good entry point to bean to cup, but they are a bit flimsy - mine lasted 3 or 4 years before dying.

You can often get good deals on refurbished delonghi machines from their official ebay refurb shop.

We got a similar magnifica at beginning of lockdown when we started working from home. It gets used a lot. Probably about 4-6 cups each morning. We got it as a refurb off ebay and its been faultless. It does require a descale about every 5 weeks or so, but thats all we do it other than a wipe down. It makes pretty good coffee very easily. However, I am getting a desire for a more fancy machine/new gadget

We've had a couple of De'Longhis

An Autentica was the latest one and a Magnifica ESAM4200 before that.

The Magnifica was a better machine and lasted 6 years. I gave up with the Autentica after 18 months. The constant nagging to descale was the final straw - our water is about as soft as it can be.

As a replacement I bought a Sage The Barista Express Impress SES876 ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334700617049)
It's not fully automatics, but it is head an shoulders above the De'Longhis in terms of coffee quality.
