I’ve just finished my lock down garden office project. Really happy with the outcome but I didn’t think about my landline. I’ve got ethernet to the office but it is out range from my DECT base station. It looks like DECT extenders are well pricey. Any other options I should consider?
What is your broadband/landline setup and how is the garden office connected to the house?
Garden office connected by ethernet straight to router. Phone socket is next to router. I set up an Asterix box years ago but so so fiddly
Can you not pull another cable (phone) through the existing cable duct?
You can use Ethernet to run a phone extension from your master socket, it's basically higher grade phone cable. Then run a standard phone in your office.
You might be able to use the spare pairs in your existing Ethernet cable if you cut them out before the RJ45 connector, technically there is a chance it would interfere with the data.
Throw it in the bin? Do you have any compelling reason to still be using a landline phone in 20201?

There are no spare pairs in Gigabit Ethernet, just in Fast Ethernet (10/100).

Sadly the number is used to call me linked to some voluntary work I do.
Looks like it’s pbx install time
Can't you just tell them your number's changed? Leave it to voicemail and call them back?
If not, yeah, Asterisk. Or look at VoIP solutions maybe?
Can't you just divert the landline ( https://www.connect-communications.co.uk/how-to-divert-calls/) and make sure your mobile is using WiFi calling?
Pretty sure I've seen this problem solved in large office/warehouse situations with a combination of RJ45 to BT socket converters and a two-way Ethernet splitter, each of which are only a few quid. The latter only required if you don't have a small switch in your garden office already.
Edit: e.g. at https://connectec.uk/networking/telecoms-accessories/telephone-plugs-sockets-and-adaptors
You'll see RJ45 to BT and BT to RJ45. Then look for a two-way RJ45 splitter.
