What paint are you using and what colour?

Normally the advice is to put on a watered down first coat as the plaster soaks it up and it is difficult to apply. After that it should be fine.

But...

If you are using cheap paint it will be higher in water content so take more coats to get the same thickness compared to a more expensive paint with less water. Also some colours cover better than others. White's are good but anything that is a strong colour particularly yellow will cover badly.

It took me 3 coats to get proper coverage of a blue in my bathroom and that was using trade paints.

Specialist plaster paints exist but I've never seen a decrator use one. When we got in help he put up a coat of cheap white on everything first as it stops you wasting more expensive paints.

Jon,

I design paint for bridges not indoors but we also own the Dulux brand.

On new plaster I've always used diluted PVA, followed by two coats. Works fine for me.

+1 doing that at the moment in the loft in fact.

The other approach is to apply a "mist coat" of watered down emulsion before you start.

Well I never ...... my uncle was a "paint designer/researcher" for ICI. He invented/patented paints and processes for ICI including, for applying paint to steel with regards car industry. Have you ever hear of him ?

Auguste Palluel

Known as Gus Palluel. He had some stuff published about the chemistry of paint, application in the car industry etc.

He didn't reckon Dulux btw, even though it was part of his paint division at the time.

If you want to cover a white wall with a dark paint you'll need 3 coats (red on white gives you pink, dark pink and red).
Prep is everything in painting. Make sure your walls are well cleaned. Then apply an "undercoat" (or a first coat with more water). Then you'll need 2 or 3 coats of your paint. Make sure you let the paint dry thoroughly between the applications.

Sounds like you might be using a vinyl paint first. Ideally you want a basic white. Is there a selco near you? Their own brand stuff is fantastic for a base coat, diluted 50/50. Two coats of that and you can get away with one top coat if you use decent paint and a good quality medium pile roller. I always try to use dulux trade and use purdy brushes and rollers, worth every penny.
