The stairs in my house are all wood but alas the previous owners smoked. Thinking of painting the wood as to try and get rid of the smell.

Can I just paint it to be rid of the smell. What preparation is needed for the wood? Any special paint

As it’s the stairs there’s some bits of wood that can’t really be replaced easily such as the 4m newell running from the ground floor to the top of the 1st floor banister or the wood that forms the supporting sides of the steps.

Wash it with sugar soap give it a half hearted scuff with sandpaper. Paint.

Is it painted at the moment or varnished.

Might be worth checking out a paint called Blockade by Smith and Rodger. Good for sealing in stuff that can stain through paint like smoke or flood damage and also as a primer whee you’re painting over another finish like going from varnish to paint

Works on other smells, not sure on nicotine but white wine vinegar and bi-carb soda has done the trick in an old house I'm doing up at the moment

Zinsser B.I.N primer/sealer is exactly what you need.

We had this in current house.

Really good clean with sugar soap or similar

Paint shop sold us Zinsser Primer/sealer.

We also removed paper from walls, washed and used proper mis-coat before a repaint in other rooms.

It worked.

I think it’s varnish with a sticky nicotine layer on it.

Can you stick “normal” paint on to the zinniser stuff?

Was going to suggest Zinsser but beaten to it.
Check rustoleum website for more information and/or call their tech team for advice - based in Co Durham last time I looked.

Yep you can paint over Zinsser Bin.
Just use it as a stain blocker. Two coats, but beware, it dries almost instantly so you'll be throwing your brush/roller away after using it. Get it on quickly and it's very runny so cover everything really well.

I had to wash down an entire nicotine-coated flat before painting. Sugar soap etc made little headway. I found that an ammonia solution was the answer.

The Zinsser primer is good if you use the solvent based one. The water based one isn’t that great.

Crown sell a primer-sealer call PX3, solvent or water based, both are excellent.

If it’s that badly stained then the answer is go nuclear. Strip the paint back to wood and start again.

I once painted a room white. In the corner from about three feet off the floor to the ceiling and about three feet out from the corner and onto the ceiling was bleeding through a weird off white/brown-ish beige. No matter how many coats of paint I put on. Spoke to the lady who owned the house and she said that this was her old dad's place who had recently died. And that corner was where his armchair was where he used to smoke his pipe every night, probably for decades 🙂

I painted the entire corner in an oil-based undercoat that's usually used for wood. Then again with the wall paint.

I wonder if this is why crap rental places are always painted magnolia..?

Nah, it's because it's the cheapest colour after white.
