So you've window frames in good nick, but could do with a fresh coat of paint
what do you need to do?
1.can you get away with a good wash with sugarsoap and new coat of gloss, or
2. sugarsoap and undercoat and gloss, (ie is undercoat necessary on sound surfaces), or
3. sand, sugarsoap, undercoat and gloss (ie is it necessary to sand or is sugarsoap sufficient)

Wash with sugar soap.
Light sand with 180.
Wash with sugar soap.
(Depending on new colour) Primer
Light sand with 180 grit.
Wash with sugar soap.
Gloss coat.
Light sand plus sugar soap.
Final gloss coat.
Inside or out?
Light rub down, oil based undercoat on windows, another very light rub with fine paper 150 ish grit and gloss
As above. Additionally, before painting (undercoat or gloss) I rub the surface with a tack cloth - this is a sticky cloth that collects any fine bits of dust and ensures a good finish. You can get rack cloth from Dulux decorator centres.

Exception..If you hit bare wood 2 undercoats just on the bare bits.No need to do the whole lot.

and bensales - blimey, you must have a lot of time on your hands ! (and very nice woodwork)
Gloss on gloss is no good.It won't adhere and come off in sheets next time you rub it down.You can (key) gloss and gloss over it but not really the right way to do things.
