I'm about to spray a 3 storey townhouse, would I be ok to spray the walls to the floor including the skirting with emulsion, using the emulsion as an undercoat?
I'm thinking it'd save me heaps of time masking twice and give the gloss something to key to?
I wouldn't.
What have the skirtings previously been painted with?
I'm not an expert but I imagine the subsequent gloss coat would start peeling off pretty quickly, undercoat is quite different from emulsion.
Saving time to do what?
On a series note, don't do it.
It's a 13 year old ex rental that has had contract gloss on it and now looks almost orange
Saving time to do what?
I'm spraying the walls and masking to top of skirts. If I could spray the skirtings too I'd only need to mask the bottom.

Oil based gloss then.
There's not a hope in hell that emulsion will stick to that.
You'll need to either continue with oil based products for the skirtings ( which will yellow over time) or prime them with Zinsser BIN or similar and then use water based undercoat and gloss. (which won't yellow anywhere near as much)
Spraying them is not really an option.
Perchy +1
Oil based gloss is the only real answer on old painted wood, if you want it to last.
Zinsser is very good too.
Thanks guys.
A decorator has said to use penetrol but can't get that anywhere?
My best bit of decorating advice is to go get tester pots in the required colour the day before non-essential shops get closed 😎
I'm sure other jobs will be allocated instead
Penetrol is for oil based paints.
Floetrol for water based.
A decorator has said to use penetrol
What for?
Floetrol could be added to the water based emulsion to reduce clogging and improve flow when you're spraying.
I was told penetrol will help the paint adhwre better. Was going to spray the doors, all 18 of them 🙈

With emulsion?
I'd probably sand, prep and prime the trim, spray it feathered up onto the walls.
Then mask off your trim and spray/backroll the walls.
We don't really do oil based paint over here anymore and there are plenty of acrlic/latex paints that will stick just fine to properly prepared previously painted oil based coatings.
Waterborne Alkyd melamine has similar self levelling and durability to oil based paint.
