In a last ditch effort to keep my decking going a wee bit longer, i have decided to paint it this year...

I've had 13 years of various stains, oils and treatments - from £4.99 for 20L to ££££ for 20L.

None of them have been very good with the "Clyde side" weather.

This year, i fancy something painty - if only to hide the deterioration of the decking for a wee while longer!

Can anyone recommend a paint (colour is irrelevant)? that will cover a multitude of sins?

cheers,

paul

I'm not a paint expert by any means but I once had a conversation with a guy in Brewers (the trade paint retailers) who convinced me that paint could never be a truly effective finish for timber floors/decking.

With constant walking it will eventually fail, and quicker than you might expect.

Wood is simply not hard and stable enough to provide a solid and reliable base for paint, unlike say concrete.

So I'm not sure whether you should expect it to last much longer than your previous treatments.

You need Schaeffers Deck Sealant

You'll also need some Schaeffers Black Caulk to fill any holes.

Don't use anything painty. Our old house's deck was painted dark brown by the previous owner, and it was an annual job of stripping all the loose bits and repainting the entire thing as it wears really fast (especially as we had dogs) and as the paint is just a layer on top, flakes off and shows the pale wood under.

Personally I'm never getting a deck ever again, but if I did I'd oil it a natural colour so it wasn't so obvious when it started to wear.

Cheers all, it seems paint isn't such a good idea.

I'd prefer to rip it all up and put down a patio but ain't got no pennies for to do that at the moment 😥

I'll have a look at the suggestions!

Thanks,

Paul

If it's going silver, scrub it with an oxalic acid (cheap on Ebay) solution and leave it for 30 minutes or so. Rinse off. Apply something like UV resistant Osmo 420 oil.
