We've a fairly good sized deck that desperately need a strip and clean, although annoyingly whilst the high traffic area is almost entirely missing the stain, the other half is basically pristine. Is deck strip and restain something that just takes a bit of time and effort, or can be entirely worth the expenditure in getting someone in to do it with "professional" (i.e. strong chemicals) kit? We've young kids and two dogs so the quicker the garden can be back in action the better, and I don't entirely fancy spending all weekend scrubbing when I could be doing something else.

A pressure washer with a decking attachment then some brush on stain?

The stain is dark and the wood isn't, so the old stain needs to come off either way.

Sounds like an opportune time to invest in an electric sander, perhaps?

Jet wash will be fine on wood stain. Done it several times. Oil it when you are done. Stain is cheap, oil is not. There is a reason for that.

We've got a mahoosive deck. The previous house owners liked brown. It was very brown..
I had a chap jet wash it for me. My jet wash wasn't powerful enough to do a decent job.
I oiled it afterwards. Looks ok now. I might try my jet wash on it his year just to clean up any residual dirt.

Household jetwash didn't do a good job on my descking, borrowed my mates 3000psi industrial jetwash and that did a grand job (but 3000psi would have bored holes in it if it was used to the max!), careful not to get too close though otherwise you'll end up with lots of wood 'feathers' to sand off!

I was recommended Screwfix decking oil - £20 for 5litres. After taking all the old dark stain off I wanted something lighter so went for pine colour......2 months on and it still looks brand new even after a couple of busy parties on there and two lively dogs always running round on it. Three coats applied with a long pile roller.

Screwfix currently have 1/3 off 5 litres of Liberon Decking oil, making it £30. Just got a can ready to do mine, when I've fixed the pressure washer.
