short notice, but myself and the gf have decided to pop up to the lakes for a couple of days this thursday and friday, so does anyone have any recommendations for places to stay up in the western lakes- preferably cockermouth area, but back in as far as keswick or even grasmere would work? ideally good for veggie food too. i've seen a few that look okay but i just wondered if anyone has any experiences, good or bad, to help narrow it down. i don't want to spend more than about £150 for a night (or two) if possible too!

Since you mentioned Cockermouth and the fact that you are prepared to spend up to £150, then The Trout in Cockermouth is your best choice, renovated to a high standard after the floods, and the food is very nice, too. But since you also mentioned vegetarian, you can always walk from there to the Quince and Medlar (less than 10min walk past a decent bike shop) for great (but not cheap) vegetarian food. Plenty more choices as you head further east/south, of course...

There are loads of decent B&Bs that will cost a lot less than £150 a night!

Excellent B&B in Keswick, run by a mountainbiker:

The Trout, the Fish and the Kirkstile Inn are all great. Excellent food and nice rooms.

Kirkstile is my favourite. Really nice food and the beer is some of the best in Britain.

Cranford House, Keswick

Could you get rooms at Cottage in the Wood, whinlatter, for that budget? If so, lovely food!

if you look on either the " groupon " or " " livingsocial " web sites there are always half price deals for hotels and b+b in the lakes, might save you a couple of bob for beer money
