Hi all,

Girlfriend is returning back to Germany tomorrow so won't see her for a while, so want to take her out for a meal tonight.

Want something with good food/atmosphere etc, but not a generic forgettable posh place. Somewhere a little "different", "unique" would be good.

Budget around £20 pp for 2-3 courses.

Any ideas?

Ta, Duane.

always had a soft spot for Viva Mexico I must say.
Not posh but good chat and certainly atmosphere. Maybe it's not there any more though. Been a while since I've eaten out / lived in Edinburgh.

Hendersons is veggie in case you didn't know. Good, but meat free!

The Dogs on Hanover Street can be good - pub grub with a twist really.

Cafe St Honore does a menu for about £20 sometimes I think. Genuinely passionate chef (Scottish chef of the year last year I think?)

Avoid most of the bland places on George St etc.

Edit: most of the French places in town are nice too. L'petit folie, l'scragot bleu or Petit Paris.

£20pp is not a lot to dine on in Edinburgh, does that include drink ?

On that budget I would go for Spoons, or Pink Olive, or that Turkish Tapas place on St Mary St which is BYOB, whose name escapes me.

Book tho - it's graduation season so the yahs are out on force, and this time they have Mummy and Daddy with them.

Does she like curry ? I lunched at Mother India yesterday, Indian Tapas. Really rather good, about £5 a plate, and 3-4 would do 2 people easily. Drink £4ish glass of wine.

Hannans Kurdish restauraunt - Johnstone Terrace, different, good value and BYO.
The Grain Store - Victoria Street
Whiski Rooms or Porto & Fi on the Mound
Illegal Jacks on Lothian Road - gets good mentions no experience first hand
Hudson Bar West End
Gourmet Burger on Geo St

Thanks for replies.

£20 does not include drink.

Is going with the #1 on Trip Advisor a safe bet?

I have never heard of that place ! (and I eat out way too much)

Sounds good, but it is in the New Town/Stockbridge, don't say you weren't warned.

Pardon ignorance, what's wrong with New Town/Stockbridge?

Coburg Street is in Leith, not Stockbridge. Are you thinking of Saxe Coburg St?

I had a fab meal in South Queensferry (Orrocco Pier?) back in the winter - lovely scallops.

Thanks for all the replies.

Ended up going to Porto & Fi on the Mound as it's pretty close to us and we were on a pretty tight schedule.

Were impressed with it, friendly service, nice atmosphere, food was tasty and in decent portions, and not too expensive.

Oh and, careful;

Book tho - it's graduation season so the yahs are out on force, and this time they have Mummy and Daddy with them.

Hopefully I'll be one of them in 2 years time 😛
