Wanting a king/superking down/feather duvet. Obviously it's a 'get what you pay for thing'. Quality as well as ethics regarding where the feathers are coming from etc. So, any recommendations? Want something good quality, pref 13,5 tog, nothing at the B&M Bargains range but likewise, the John Lewis offering at around £700 is a bit much.
Cheers
I went to IKEA. No idea re the ethics, I'd expect them to be bandwagoning on that these days tho.
Huh, didn't think about IKEA... any good?
I didn't think about going anywhere else 😂
Not that they are the best, I just reckoned they would be good and good value, and I CBA shopping around.
Yeah they are grand. 10-20 years old now (I have 3 in total).
Soak and sleep do nice ones, we got a Hungarian goose down one a few years ago.
If you're going to get a double then it probably doesn't matter much, but if you've seen the light, are over 5'4" tall and want a decent Single duvet ( or indeed a pair of Single duvets) then buy German. Single duvets in Germany are a massive 220cm long, ie long enough for an actual adult person.
I've got five of the damn things and they're absolutely great.
The hungarian down duvets from House of Emily are great, and conform to the Responsible Down Standard. Just looking at them, I'm intrigued about that £750 one! Ours were a thin and thick set that could button together to give three options for different seasons.
13.5 tog! I'm not basing it on anything scientific but I reckon down togs are worth much more than synthetic. I got one of those thick/thin ones like cb200, the thin is 2.5, I dont know what the thick one is cos I haven't used it in years and I wouldn't have used both together if I lived on Neptune.
I'm not telling you what you want but if its your first down quilt you might want to be sure.
I'd like a wool one in future.
The John Lewis 3 in 1 duvets are great as you can chop and change dependant on the time of year. Lots of variations of fillings. The most environmentally friendly and comfy would probably be the Earthking reclaimed down one here https://www.johnlewis.com/earthkind-reclaimed-natural-down-3-in-1-duvet-13-5-tog-4-5-9-tog/p5129547?size=super-king-260-x-220cm
I’d like a wool one in future.
I can recommend something from here
https://www.thewoolroom.com/bedding/wool-duvets/?page=NaN
We have a split one where you use the thinner duvet in the summer, the thicker on in the autumn, then the press stud them both together for winter.
Really warm but somehow don't make you sweat.
I have a Baavet wool duvet. It is an absolute joy to sleep under, the wool is British and none of the ethical concerns of down.
What is so good about wool? That website says:
Cool when it's warm. Warm when it's cool. Naturally, it's wool.
which broke my bullshit detector
Baavet is what we have. I ignore the bs tag lines, we generally are comfy all year round under it, but if its a hot night, well, you'll be hot.
It wraps round your body more than down, it's denser and more like blankets but without the weight.
Wool duvets, new to me but sound good. Do they keep their shape or settle like down ones?
£700+ notes on a duvet.....
I'd say ours has kept it's shape, though to be honest I can't remember what it was like to start with! It still feels the same as when it came out of the packaging.
It was from the Baavet bargain bin, about £80 quid I think for a kingsize. Main driver at the time was to get around the ethical issues of down which we were unhappy with, plus some friends had one that they seemed to really rate. We also liked the fact it was UK sheep and manufactured. When it was brand new it had a slightly sheepy aroma to it which I really liked, it was like going to sleep surrounded by friendly creatures all snuggled up to keep you warm.
Another bavet user here. Two from the seconds section that there's nothing really wrong with.
Will be switching the rest of ours to wool when they need replacing.
Bavet here as well. Absolutely lovely.
which broke my bullshit detector
Problem is it's true. I used to get horribly hot and sweaty under down. That doesn't happen with the wool. We don't take it off in the summer either where before we always switched to a sheet only.
I got a really nice down one from Asda for £40
A wool duvet has been introduced two days ago in the chamber. Warm but not heavy and sweaty. Early days for a proper review but I'm impressed so far. No idea what was paid for it.
We have an Ikea Down one which has been great and I would recommend them if you are just buying without much thought to where the things come from. Mrs WF was concerned with Down ethics so bought a Wool one to replace it. However, being a UK one it is only 2 metres and not 220 like our continental sized one, so despite the wool one being lovely, I cannot use it as my feet end up out the bottom. Anyone, we have a large duvet each now 🙂
Got our 3 in 1 king size from Debenhams a few years back, reduced to £150 from around £300. Given todays news might be worth a look.
Another one for Baavet, we all have them and another set in the caravan, really rate them. Gave them a ring before we bought the first and ended-up with a slight second, you wouldn't know it.
Thanks everyone. Two things I’d not considered. Wool, and continental sizing.
Cheers
continental sizing.
Yep. It's soooooo British to persevere with something that is just ****in wrong.
And so German to actually make the damn things the rightsize for their purpose rather than just shrug and say that it's always been that way.
Yeah, and I’m well over six foot so that’s going to make a difference 👍
Yet another recommendation for wool. They don't settle/clump. We have Devon Duvet in summer and autumn versions (can't remember actual tog). The warmer one also has a nice weight to it, a bit like I imagine the faddy gravity blanket things aim for. Find we can can cope with wider range of temperatures without clamminess.
Harrison spinks at dreams about 100 quid feather and down no feather loss at all british made for over 250 yrs.
not a duvet geek wife works for them
Thanks everyone. Just got home to find a new Baavet massive winter duvet and pillows. Of course, in the interest of product testing i'll be "working" from bed for the rest of the day. Good recommendings!
Are the Baavet duvets machine washable?
The Woolroom have some that are.
Another Baavet user for the last year, I love it. Apparently no need to wash them , just hang them out to air every so often.
Correct way to clean a baavet is to dip it
Interested in these wool duvets, how is the weight compared to say a 13tog feather duvet, I like a fairly heavy duvet. Also how do you wash them ? Can you dry clean them ?
