With the political events which are happening this year, what would be the recommended unbiased, balanced, informed editorial magazine to read?
Time? Spectator? Economist? Needs to be Uk rather than US focussed. Any other ideas ?
Economist from that list imo. But I’m struggling to do any more than thumb my nose at reality and have gone for Private Eye this year.
Spectator is right leaning. New Statesman and Prospect both left meaning. I tend to buy one of each at the airport as I consider Blighty from afar....
+1 on Economist and Private Eye.
The spectator is pretty right wing.
I quite enjoy the Economist articles I've read. Seems pretty factual without too much spin. But that might just mean we're politically aligned
Economist by far, don’t read the financial sections though..
And since Brexshite is the main topic of conversation most of the Mag is useless.
New York Times?
iQ ?
I've got an Economist subscription, I think it's really good and covers a lot of domestic and international stuff really well. You can get a 3 month trial sub for £12, which is a bargain. The iPhone and Android apps are good. I don't always agree with their editorial stance but they do actual admit their wrong from time to time when the reflect on past events.
The Spectator. Holy mother of God. I bought a copy a few weeks back just to break out of my echo chamber. It's like the Daily Mail opinions sections but written by complete raging arseholes rather than misguided attention seekers. If you would enjoy JRM reading you a bedtime story then buy it. Otherwise no.
ourman ^^^ has it; use multiple sources - speccie, new statesman, economist, private eye, time and an occasional dip into the FT.
Economist is ok unless it's an article about UK Politics in which case there is a very strong Tory bias, although Brexit is a bit of an exception. They don't mind contradicting themselves either, one article can advocate an investment policy and the next article will utterly slag it off if proposed by Labour...
Or the week?
Economist is free on my library app so worth checking yours if you fancy digital. I've had the same search as the op and ended up reading the Economist. I haven't noticed the same bias as footflaps. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist of course.
I like the NYTimes for left leaning US view.
There was someone on Radio 4 the other day talking about Delayed Gratification, which is a slow news type thing, where they look at what has happened in the recent past and analyse it... sounded like it could be interesting as they are able give a little more perspective vabout events.
Might not be what you are looking for, but sounded interesting...
I have been subscribing to Private Eye for over 20 years and The Economist for about a year... I would highly recommend both.
Up until a few years ago, The Guardian and BBC news websites would be my main online source, but since they have gone downhill I tend to use Reuters, AP and Bloomberg.
My brother gets delayed gratification, then a couple of months later I get it off him so it's even better.
Private eye is excellent for proper news. Subscription is a bargain too.
The Week is good. I was reading it alot when i knew current affairs were coming up in an interview i had.
EConomist and Private Eye.
The spectator was edited by Bo Jo for a long time so it's a long way from balanced.
The Economist is good imo. Never considered it Tory bias but it probably is in the pro business sense but not in the right wing loon sense.
New statesman is interesting but definitely similar style to older guardian papers, left leaning but still not like the guardian has become.
The Week for me.
Not relevant to the OP’s requirements but if anyone has an interest in US politics and is on Instagram then give Jessica Yellin a follow. She’s an excellent journalist who gives clear explanations on all the latest news and noise - it’s her stories you need to watch. All the wall debacle is laid out and she covered the Kavanaugh nomination brilliantly as well.
I have a subscription the FT through work. If I didn’t, I’d pay for it myself. I’ve given up on the bbc news website as unreadable trivia, but the Brexit Have your says always entertain.
In the age of Brexit, satire is dead. But I do enjoy Private Eye and always have. The Economist fits in well too and is the obvious weekly choice, but is too in depth for my tastes and time.
The FT app is very good too.
There is no unbiased option.
Closest you will get to unbiased is Private Eye. Beyond that its mix and match time.
I do read the economist but it does have a pretty severe ideological bias which is reflected in its political preferences.
Viz.
The mash.. slightly biased satirical musings. Quite often so close to the truth you won't realise It s satire. Other days it's random stories are a welcome distraction from the Brexit car crash.
