Applying Hanlon's Razor, I'm pretty sure that this behaviour is neither racing nor speed limit policing. It's just that there are an awful lot of stupid people in this world and many of them drive cars. Their speed is erratic because they are too stupid to master the operation of their cruise control, in fact most of them don't even know their car is fitted with such a device. They trundle along, blissfully unaware of almost everything around them, and certainly unaware of how much they are annoying others.
Last year someone either tried to race me or just annoy me, I’m not sure which. Overtook, then slowed down to 60 ish with their mate still next to me so I was boxed in.
After a couple of minutes of this their mate also pulled in ahead of me, I hit reset on the cruise control and overtook them and that was that, all very odd.
The rest of the time I’m pretty sure it’s just people not paying attention to maintaining a constant speed and adaptive cruise control probably has a part to play too.
This has nothing to do with ‘racing’, I think it’s an obnoxious sense of superiority, personally enforcing the speed limit because nobody is allowed to go faster, and they need to be controlled and taught the error of their ways.

It’s definitely goading. The car is nothing special but the FR spec for the time / model was the easiest way to get the spec I want.
It’s also not them being bad at managing speed, slowing down to 60 then up to 90 to overtake is not due to inattentive driving.

+1. I do think that the type of car you drive does affect how other drivers around you behave. Whether it did/does in the OPs case though, I dunno.
My Wife's Ford Ka & our Shitroen C3 Picasso family fun bus being prime examples of cars that people would cut-up left, right & centre as you were clearly just an old dodderer on the way to the bingo hall.
I've never noticed this kind of behaviour , but obviously its a thing, just judging by the number of people on this thread who have also experienced it.
I've got a friend who used to have a golf gti who reckoned it used to happen to him all the time.

I have not read the thread other than OP and a couple of replies, so apologies if this has been said already, but my advice is slow down if presented with this situation.
Your "impede progress" seems to be code for "must respond to threat to my manhood", when in fact the racer (if they are not a misperception) is just a very dangerous idiot and any right you think you have to travel without impediment is trumped by safety and duty of care to other road users, whether they are being illegal or not. Your responsibility is to slow down until they piss off, or if required, you call the cops.
A car is bloody dangerous and you need to use it responsibily.

Ah fair enough. My advice still stands. If people really want to race you, slow down and avoid a dangerous situation, plus racing on the public highway is illegal.
If they are wallies that can't stand being overtook so have to take you back, and then slow down to below 70, well just overtake them again.
edit "impede progress" may have triggered me, when people say "making progress" it kinda gives away that they feel they have a right to speed and generally hoon about the place putting everyone else in danger.

With the recent fuel cost, I've been experimenting with eking a bit more out of my car. 2 round trips down the A303 in the last week. I've tried dropping 5-10mph below the speed limit on the climbs, and the same amount over in the subsequent descent, for the same average speed, and therefore same journey time.
I've always ensured that I was never pulling in infront of anyone - I'd only come in in front of them if I was sure that they were going slower than I intended to go. And descending I'd generally only be using the terrain to accelerate, rather than adding throttle.
Chances are there was at least one person I exchanged position with a few times.
Got over 70mpg on 3 of the 4 trips, and found it quite relaxing.
I've done long drives with the CC on before. Its quite stressful at a certain level of traffic, due mainly to the people who dont maintain their speed (guess I have become what I once hated)
Only ever had this twice and both times were on the motorbike, when a car wanted to race me,
Little souped up mazda thing slowed down so much that they were slowing the traffic on an a-road, i filtered past safely, then went to go past them and they put the boot down, still wasnt quick enough to keep up but he gave it a good go.
Another time on the dual carriageway i was happily cruising along, went past on of those horrible pt cruiser things, as i pulled in he pulled out and went past we had a bit of fun on an empty stretch of road, he kept with me until the tonne then i was off.
Was it stupid? - yes
Was it reckless? - Yes
Should i have done it? No but i was young and carefree at the time

So, the magic numbers then. With just the one 282bhp motor, 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds. There’s none of the whiplash acceleration of the rival leccy-SUVs. The battery is a modest 80kWh gross, 74kWh useable. BMW looks to be dragging its feet badly here.
No doubt 0-30 is a slightly different matter in an EV, but still, my 2.5t diesel Discovery is 6.95s 0-60 😂
Real world is under 6 seconds for 0-60 , which is fast enough for me. Not bad for a 2.2T family "sports activity vehicle". My other car is a van so anythings fast compared to that 🙂

I got this in the Abarth a lot, but not so much in the Giulia. The complete lack of anything distinguishing really seems to put a stop to it. The odd informed RS5/6 or AMG55 might want to play, but nobody else notices it. It's great. I can pootle along at you're-not-getting-banned-or-even-puledMPH and just enjoy the drive.

Someone with a cooking BMW trying to goad you into a race while you're driving something thats best suited to the track or covering the entirety of europe in a day (and 9 fuel stops).
The only way that ends is with a crash, a death or losing your license for a couple of years. Especially as at legal speeds, the difference is minimal.
One benefit of them all moving to electric (Plaid, Taycan, PS2, E-Tron etc) is that if the urge takes you (not really) you can get reality altering acceleration which disabuses them of any notion of "racing" without even breaking the speed limit.

The car you drive absolutely makes a difference to how some people treat you.My wife used to have a DC2 Integra, and I have never had so many people drive like absolute dicks in the direct vicinity as when we were in that. Traffic lights, motorways, end of speed limits, you name it.
She used to work for a premium sports/GT car manufacturer, and we were lucky enough to borrow cars from time to time, we'd get similar in that. It was really bloody tiring TBH!
I've got a tuned 90s Japanese car, I get the same in that. It's not just kids in hatches either, a lot seems to be middle aged men.

Google doesn't have the data on who is more of a driving god. You need to battle it out on the roads to find that out and it really does matter, it is very important to know you are a "better" driver than an anonymous person in another car.
If it’s solely the badge you think that’s goading then, remove it from the back.
My S-line has just the A3 badge at the back and the S-line badge on the side and have never had any problems but yes the whole you been on cruise Control on a long journey and some cars clearly not can be frustrating too but you just drive your own way, they’ll disappear/pull off at one point!

People definitely treat you different according to the car you are driving. My wife's 2008 Honda Accord estate seems to have a cloaking device for all the attention/hassle it gets. So relaxing. Compare that to my Lotus (mainly) track day car on the way to track days - lots of crappy attention.

I always seem to find that when these people get on back roads they are unable to do more than absolutely boot it on straight bits of road and then go round corners with the brakes on.
Amuses me no end, I thankfully don't drive much now, but always used to have the odd idiot who would fly up behind me on a straight section then vanish backwards as soon as we got into corners.

When I'm in the camper folk will noticeably speed up to stop me getting out Infront of them / nearly have head on colisions trying to get past me in the stupidest of places

It's an Ibiza estate - hoik it over the shoulder and use the load area.
Worst examples I had were doing my IAM stuff using my car at the time, a BMW Z4. Having the seats almost over the rear axle makes tailgaters feel even closer when you're - correctly - driving slower than the limit where conditions require that approach. If you ever need confirmation that the majority of drivers speed around built up areas, do your IAM and you'll never have empty road behind you.

I just assume when someone says you've got a small nob because you drive a big/flashy car, that they probably have their own insecurities/complex. Small nob (maybe ironically), want a fast car really, have an ugly wife, ride gravel because they are rubbish at MTB'ing, who knows 😉

I don't drive above the legal limit, nearly always on cruise. We're in a VW Caddy Maxi Life and for some reason that seems to make people feel insecure - seem to frequently get other drivers who just don't want to be behind us - overtake, pull in front and then let their speed dip.

I know this has generally been the underlying theme in the thread - it always happens to me when I use cruise, no matter what I'm driving. It's very annoying, but I don't assume they want to race, just are terrible at judging/maintaining a constant speed

Do the want you to bury the throttle when they are half way past you, prolonging or preventing their overtake?

I've never disagreed. My first car was a 71 Beetle, and I've driven everything from 5 series BMWs, vans, to beaten up old hatchbacks. People didn't treat the BMW the same way they behaved towards me in a Peugeot 106. 😀

This is absolutely true. You drive a small car and you're insignificant pond life to be bullied off the road. Driving my partner's Up! is an exercise in assertive driving. A big car and similarly people feel the need to take you down a peg. There's a trope about German marques and indicators but having driven a couple, indicating just tips people off so they can box you in. You've only got yourselves to blame there.

I’m sure you can turn it off but it just made me smile that a car brand renowned for optional indicators would have such a feature.
