I drive a car that has a badge on it that seems to attract people that want to race you, typically driving along a dual carriageway on cruise and after I overtake them / they overtake me, they then try and get in front and then slow down, so then I need to overtake ad infinitum.

What’s the easiest way to tell them to leave me alone as I’m not interested?

It really counts on whether you have vanity plates fitted or not.

But surely slowing down impedes my progress?

Buy a car with a different badge.

Just carry on driving as normal??

I've got an RS5 and no one seems to challenge me

I need a badge to day ‘I didn’t buy this car for racing, but it happens to be the best spec too’

Try not overtaking them then pulling in front of them so they have to overtake you..

I overtake at 75, pull in, then they overtake and slow down to 60…. so I’m and so forth.

Try driving at 70 🙂

Yeah, I know what you mean though. When on Cruise Control your pace is constant but you get to see how much natural variance there is when cars are under manual control.

Could do, but sometimes they seek you out, overtake you then slow down

Slow down, I get the same on my 42 year old motorbike, I really don't want to race!

Just ignore them
Don’t overtake again, they will soon get bored and go bother someone of the same mentality of themselves

A few mph given up for 5 or 10 minutes makes hardly any difference in timing of a journey but works wonders for your stress relief ( imho )

Yep, best way not to race is err... not to race.

I had a Civic Type R and just pootling along at the speed limit did the trick. If anyone started playing silly buggers I'd just not react at all and carry on as I was.

Meh. You're over-thinking it.

A few mph given up for 5 or 10 minutes makes hardly any difference in timing of a journey but works wonders for your stress relief ( imho )

And will save you a lot of fuel.

Used to get this on the M1 all the time. Tiresome is all I can say. There was nothing I could do to shake them a lot of the time. Drop speed right down, they do the same. Put my foot down and they respond. I think I just had to sit at 60-65 for a long time and they either raced off eventually or exited at their junction.

Slowing down I know is the right thing to do for so many reasons. rarely is traffic so uncongested that you don’t end up in the same 100m section of gridlock as someone else you overtook 5 minutes

I think this is cruise control Vs foot.

The difference in control/accuracy is there.

I think you're over thinking it.

when they see that you’re in a basic spec fancy car they are offended that you’ve overtaken them in a car less powerful than theirs.

we used to have a golf gti and a basic octavia. in the octavia no one used to cut me up or roar ahead at traffic lights or tailgate. these things all happened in the golf.

so the best way to stop it is to get an anonymous car.

I discovered recently that sticking the ACC on at between 56-60mph is a damn site less stressful than 65-70mph. Pootling might also be an age thing 🤔 but I'm sure I'm not really old 😂

Drive quicker 75 is a bit of an in between speed, 90-100 should solve the problem

What badge is it? I can’t think of any badge that encourages people to drive faster

Ignore them. Race tracks are for racing. If they don’t ignore you, wave them past…

Come on tell us the “race me” badge? Is it Performante or EcoPlus?

I think Matt and Scotroutes have it.
People not using cruise control don't know how much their speed yo-yos.
Oh,and at the lights,be more Marty. 😉

Similarly, I'd love an old (looking, ordinary family) banger with 350bhp + under the lid. Then when Arsehole Willie in his Corsa starts faffing around at the lights.......off I pop.

I do 100k miles+ every year, this is definitely a thing, i get it in the bus, which has a 100kmph speed limiter.
I get it in the car, (diesel 4x4)
I got it in my old car (mpv)
I hear many other drivers saying the exact same thing, and I don’t just mean on here.
I think it’s partly ACC vs foot, and partly drivers who do it aren’t really paying attention.
Eg: if they’re not paying attention, the first time they see an overtaking bus is when it’s beside them, the automatic reaction is to put the foot down.

See also, people who crawl past you on a motorway/dc, then slow down when you reach a hill, you overtake them, then never see them again.
I never used to get it on the bike though.

It’s a Seat FR, so nothing amazing, but seems to attract other less fast boy racers, especially other Seat owners. When I bought the car I could have got the same spec and engine without the FR logo, but they’re rare, it was easiest to just get an FR

So not really racing then? Just poor road awareness?

I came in here expecting tales of pink slips and traffic light grand prix…

I think you’re probably overthinking that aspect of it tbh.
I get them too, every friggin journey, and I doubt anyone would bother racing a bus, i mean why would you?
If ur car can do 63mph, you’ll win.
If ur car has more than 40bhp, you’ll win at the traffic lights too.

Bit of both isn't it.
Cruise v Foot and belend boy racers with testosterone overload.
A mate's dad had a cosworth back in the 90's he was constantly having people trying to burn him off (As it was called back then) He lost his licence in the end but also chose a less obviously rapid car.

I'm not sure the wayback machine can even remember that far back. Also, how old are we?!

Anyhow. I did a massive wheelspin on Saturday pulling out of a junction. I also did it with a woman that night.

A coincidence? I think not.

It's not actually that quick

0-60 is ok'ish 4.5s

But there are quicker Leon's out there tbf

100-200kmh seems to be the measure. My bloated V8 is over 11s - you're getting tuned 2l turbo's doing it in and around 5s

Debadge the car - keep the badge for when selling it

I've always taken any flashy badges off my cars - why on earth would one want others to know what engine/etc their car has I don't understand the whole badging thing it's so so weird, but I realise I'm in the minority with that

I think you're over-thinking it and it's more to do with people's inability to maintain speed on a road.
I can't really think of a 'quick' FR. Performance is adequate but they are not that fast.
We've got two on the driveway (2 litre diesel Ibiza and 2 litre diesel Leon) and never get "raced".

I borrowed my sisters mk 1 fiesta ST once to go to a wedding, had to pick up my shoes from work at 10pm on a Friday night. immediately before work is a a park and ride and that night there was a massive cruise like something out the hallowed pages of MaxPower and the police were in the middle of raiding it. I was pootling along thinking "bollocks to cars with labels" despite being completely uninvolved I felt like a right fudd on the return journey with every set of trafficlight having like 4 knobs revving their engine.

Bmw 335d with no badge. 300hp and looks identical to 320d.

I've never had anyone trying to race me in any car. The same thing happens to me. Overtake at 70, pull in in front, they overtake me, pull in and slow down.

I put it down to not paying attention and or not driving on cruise control.

Sometimes I speed up to 73 to pass!

Make it into a game: how many complete loops (them passing you, you going back around them again) can you manage before they realise?

I know where the OP is coming from a bit though. My car's the opposite of shy and retiring, debadging doesn't work when you've got four big exhaust tips and a ridiculous spoiler. I just ignore them and let them carry on, slowing down a bit is the easiest way.

supersport isnt an ST though is it .....

Ive got a badged up pseudo hot hatch .....because like many others the interior spec i wanted only came in this model - that and many of the poverty spec models had all the hallmarks of being ex-hire cars.

reality is its not even Tepid still has a 3 cylinder engine with the capacity of a milk carton and no turbo.

slow as ****.

Doesnt stop the morons though, Driving at 60 using the speed limiter does though. Relaxing while cruising listening to radio 6

So, the magic numbers then. With just the one 282bhp motor, 0-62mph takes 6.8 seconds. There's none of the whiplash acceleration of the rival leccy-SUVs. The battery is a modest 80kWh gross, 74kWh useable. BMW looks to be dragging its feet badly here.

No doubt 0-30 is a slightly different matter in an EV, but still, my 2.5t diesel Discovery is 6.95s 0-60 😂

True to a certain extent. What it's bulk gives up in nimble handling, the drivetrain makes up for some way in pure grip

It's not even that quick to be fair for 444bhp. Come up against a similar generation M3 though on anything but bone dry roads and it's not even a fair fight

OP what colour is your car? I used to have a Leon FR, it was the older one with the 2.0 Litre petrol so it was pretty quick. It was completely anonymous though probably because it was quite a dull colour a sort of mid metallic blue.

I've got a Focus ST. I test drive a couple and knew I really like them but went out my way to get one in High Impact Boring Ford Blue. There are a couple of ST exclusive colours and red which I avoided. As a result it really doesn't get a lot of attention.

I get it in my car, it's actually quite plain for some reason seems to attract dickheads. Had one on Saturday, some chav in his knob-mobile with windows down and some loud (C)rap music belting out, took off a the traffic lights all revs and belted it down to the next roundabout, then went all the round it and back the way he came from. I assume he actually wanted to turn right but wanted a race first!

I’ve had people do that for years, and I’m pretty damned sure that a 51-plate diesel Octavia isn’t the sort of car that entices idiots to ‘race’ me! I’d be happily pootling along, minding my own business at around 74 or 5, which is actually about 70 according to my satnav, someone would come up behind obviously going a bit faster, otherwise they wouldn’t be catching up with me, they’d sit there fairly close for a bit, indicate and pull out and overtake, then pull back in and then slow down, forcing me to lift off and slow down as well. Then they’d speed up a bit, so I’d do the same until there was a reasonable gap, then I’d find the gap closing up because they’re slowing up again.

This has nothing to do with ‘racing’, I think it’s an obnoxious sense of superiority, personally enforcing the speed limit because nobody is allowed to go faster, and they need to be controlled and taught the error of their ways.

There have been comments on here to that end at times as well.

Personally, as far as I’m concerned, they can do one.
