So almost a year ago I bought the girlfriend a pre registered ‘new’ car saving a few quid.
The dealer rang me as the Road Tax demand has gone to them meaning the V5 was never transferred to me and no-one (yes me too) noticed
Any implications? Especially value wise?

The V5C isn't proof of ownership.

Why did you not register it in your name before now?

Might raise some questions with a seller as to the vehicle's history, but in theory it will still have the same number of owners, so not sure that it would have an effect on value.

If you sent off the new keeper part of the V5C then DVLA should have gone through their process and eventually issued you a new V5C after contacting the previous registered keeper.
It sounds like the seller offered to do it for you and for whatever reason didn't.
Its potentially a £1000 fine for failing to notify then of the sale or transfer of a vehicle.

Cheers guys
The f*** up cane about as the car wasn’t ready on the day we drove to pick it up, it should of been and it was a 60 mile round trip. So the sales guy offered to deliver it two days later. I wasn’t there at drop off day and just never thought about it
Think i’ll lay it on thick with the dealer when he rings

Tell the dealer they need to tax the car they are still legally responsible for taxing, otherwise they could get a £1000 fine for not informing the DVLA that they have sold it.

Once they have taxed it, they can do what they should have done a year ago, and inform the DVLA of the sale, and sent you the new keeper section of the V5c

Then you can re tax it properly and you’ve had a years free road tax (which would have been refunded to the dealer after the sale, if they were any good at their admin)

If you don’t keep your information up to date with the DVLA, you may be liable for taxes and legal penalties on a car you’ve already sold, even if you can prove you weren’t speeding or driving uninsured, you can still be fined up to £1,000 for not supplying up-to-date information.

vehicle excise licence isnt transferable. When you sell a taxed vehicle, you get the VEL refunded to you. The new keeper has to tax from day one. So it seems you have had a yrs free VEL

Not at all, his vehicle has been taxed for the full year perfectly legally.
As far as the DVLA are concerned, it’s still the legal responsibility of the Dealer to tax the car, and up until now, they have.

The driver of the car doesn’t have to be the official “keeper” or the person who pays the tax/speeding fines etc. (Company cars etc)

I suspect it hasn't - dealers don't tax cars on their forecourts and certainly wouldn't do it knowing they'd sold a car because they'd expect the new owner to do pay. The reminder is probably the first the dealer knew that the registered keeper didn't transfer at the point of sale.

Why did they just get a “renewal” notice then ?

Could be the SORT reminder.

I think they would be a lot more worried if it was a SORN renewal, knowing they screwed up so badly a customer has been driving an untaxed car for a year (that they are liable for the fines on)

Edit- and dealers do not have to SORN cars anyway. So it isn’t that.

They have to tax it to register it, salesman forgot to transfer it to new owner, sales admin didn't spot that they never got the remaining months refunded. Get it into your name asap and taxed and never think about it again.

Go to see dealer, get the new owner slip from them and send it off.
Then tax it in your name from the beginning of April.

And move on.

Keep a record of what happened incase the DVLA ever ask. But personally I wouldn't worry about it.

This won't work because as soon as the DVLA get the paperwork for change of owner the tax will be cancelled.

Did you not read the third paragraph of the post you selectively quoted ?

Clearly a quick Google after your initial response.

Yes I did but I obviously misunderstood what you meant. I read it as you were suggesting the dealer taxed it for a year from now and the OP tax it in 12 months time once it expires.

Actually @nealglover I don't get what you mean.

This

Suggests you think it's been taxed up until this point, so what period are you suggesting the dealer needs to tax it for now?

Dealer can transfer v5 to you online. Then you can tax straight away. Job done a piece of paper will turn up a week or so later.

^^^^
Dealer transferred V5 online whilst on the phone to me earlier but he assured me that as a dealer the tax stayed on the vehicle
However it appears that it’s no longer taxed and I can’t tax it online without any paperwork/reference numbers
I’ve tried everything. An abrupt email has been sent to them as she now has an untaxed vehicle. Not impressed
To answer some of the bickering above, the car was taxed by them when we bought it so no free tax as such.

When I bought my new car last year, it came with a years free road tax. Just got the reminder to renew it at the end of the month. Some dealers clearly do pay for the first years tax.

If they can send you the number off the new owner slip you can tax it.

Clearly. Which I put “edit” rather than just adding it in. (Are we not allowed to use google to find things out now?)

Suggests you think it’s been taxed up until this point, so what period are you suggesting the dealer needs to tax it for now?

It needs taxing. Currently the dealer is still legally responsible for doing so. So they need to tax it. Then arrange the paperwork properly as they should have done originally.

if they can do it online as mentioned above, then maybe that’s an option, but it’s 25 years since I worked at a dealership and wasn’t aware.

(I won’t google for fear of drac criticising me again 🙄 )
