Hello boffins. I've got an Acer Aspire laptop that won't power up. There is no sign of life at all. LED on the AC adapter is on (it was pulsing yesterday but just constant on now).

I went out yesterday afternoon and left the laptop on with it connected to AC power. Came back later (yeah, nice ride thanks) and deadness. Sometimes when I'm using it I get the warning that it has switched to DC and is charging. AC adapter is new but sometimes requires a wiggle at the connection. Laptop is about 6yrs old and the battery is original. Battery power runs down in minutes.

I'm thinking it might be a dead battery and it can't power on without it even with AC connection.

I've previously had to replace the AC adapter a couple of times and when I did so the last time (last month) the new one was a dud and had to be returned the next day. If I have to take it back it's a 60 mile round trip that takes up the afternoon. Should I just order a new battery? Could it be something more serious?

Information will be gratefully received. Ta.

Have you tried plugging it into AC with the battery removed?

It should POST with or without the battery in, the obvious thing would be the DC jack especially as it's needed a wiggle before. Battery out and adaptor in I'd try a multimeter on the battery terminals and see if there's any sign of life there, If not it's probably the jack.

I would say its the jack plug thats worn over time, part it self is less that £10, where you based might be able to help.

check the power cable plug (into the laptop) for voltage and if that's working OK then what Clunker said - if you've been wiggling the hack for years then I'd say it's now bust.

No sign of life with or without the battery. The jack plug on the AC is only six weeks old. Wiggling no longer helps.

I meant the one on the laptop, over time they fail.

The socket the jack goes into is probably knackered - esp if wiggling doesn't help any more.

It was always a loose fit with this new adapter. I've just tried the connection with the old one (why I still have a broken adapter, I don't know) and it's very solid click in connection. Access to the socket looks to be a real pain - have to take all of the casing apart.

The weather doesn't inspire an afternoon of cycling so I might as well try taking it back to Maplin and grumble a little bit to see if they'll give me a better fitting adapter.
