Ok, so the laptop's expired and we're off to buy a replacement tomorrow. We're ok with moving files, but not sure how to go about moving our existing programmes to a new computer. And...what happens with our Norton subscription? Is it registered to me and able to be moved or is it registered to that (old) computer? Is all this beyond a computer numpty? 😆

I fear you'll have to reload all software from the original medium (i.e. dvds).

But forget Norton - use Microsoft Security Essentials instead. It's free, un-noticeable and good.

Yeah - never been sure about Norton. I use Microsoft SE on the shop computer and it's been fine. Cheers John.

You'll need the original disks. Sometimes you can download the latest version from the makers website and just put in your registration details... or make the break and use free software

You are well rid of Norton. I'd rather have a virus. MSE or Avast are good free options.

How are you going to get the files off the dead laptop? Is it just the screen is dead or do you have external backup?

I had to physically remove the disk, buy a doofer to allow it be plugged into a desktop, network "shared" the disk from the desktop and then copied the files. There might have been an easier way - like keeping backups!

Software from scratch. MSE is great and free.

Not much I can add to that.

You can't (easily) move programs between PCs, you need to reinstall from scratch. Even if you could, you generally wouldn't want to.

Moving data is easy, but it depends what you mean by "dead" and "expired." If it's genuinely dead, ie it won't power on at all, then you'll have to remove the hard disk from the old machine and either put it as a second drive in another PC or invest in an external caddy to put it in. If "dead" is melodrama for "it's a bit slow on Tuesdays" then you should just be able to copy what you need across the network or onto DVDs maybe.

+1 for MSE.

PC mending guy says it's the graphics chip and gonna cost around £300 to fix. The computer seems to be all there, but the screen is seeing double with terrible vertical hold problems. We should be able to stick all our files onto a memory stick or external harddrive. Cheers for all the input 🙂
And the next daft question; what do we do with the old one - for best secure and environmentaly friendly disposal?

I think he's saying its a motherboard problem and beyond economical repair. If he plugged in a monitor and got the same problem then he's right, if not it could be the LCD screen which is way cheaper than £300!
