I don't suffer from SAD, and I don't particularly struggle with getting up, but it is depressing waking up when its dark outside, and no doubt it will help my wife who struggles to get up!
I know you can get proper SAD panel light things.
I know you can get clever £100 alarm clocks that imitate a gradual sunrise.
I've just had a google and seen you can get a smart bulb with an App so feasibly I guess I could turn the bedroom light off with the app, and have it 'sunrise' in the morning at 5:45. However the one I've found is an LED colour changing gizmo equivalent to a 40w bulb. Are there any proper ones with a daylight style bulb that works through google smarthome rather than a crappy app?
I thought the IKEA wireless LED stuff does that....
I have one of those alarm clocks and desktop SAD light. I would be up for selling them if you’re interested? Exercise and having two kids that wake up really early has put a stop to using them for me. They are really good and genuinely help.
I have a Philips Hue bulb in my bedroom connected to a Dot, it's programmed to come on gradually in the morning however unless I'm missing something although you can tell it come on over a period of time you can't set what the ending brightness will be. It seems to go off the last brightness the bulb was at when you used it (so if I have it at 100% the last time I use it then it's a very different waking experience than if it had been at 20% the last time I used it). I can't remember which app I'm using at the moment to control the schedule - I think Apple's Home app (as the Philips one didn't seem to work properly for it).
if you setup the routine in the hue app you can chose to have the light gradually come on. (not alexa)
I have a light strip all around the bottom of the bed which comes.pn gradually from 5.50.
we really like.it
best thing is if you wake.up at night and it is dark it is not time to get uo
if you setup the routine in the hue app you can chose to have the light gradually come on. (not alexa)
But can you set the end brightness? It sounds like on your bed lights you probably never use them other than the morning routine but for my bedroom light if I go in there in the evening and tell alexa to set it to 100% (so I can find something in the wardrobe) and then turn it off the next morning my wake routine that it set to come on over a 20 minute period goes from 0-100% in that period vs say 0-20% brightness which is what I actually want.
I have them switching on 5.50 to 7.30 and sunset to 11pm
I use the 'relaxing' scene so in terms of brightness, no idea what that is but its not a white light. It is bright enough to read in bed though. There is a night light scene which we tried for a bit but it wasn't bright enough. So I think the end brightness is set by the routine
We don't have any wardrobes in the bedroom, but if I did I would put in specific task lighting, you can pick up cheap battery powered motion sensor ones from amazon if you didn't want to faff about with wiring. The lighting round the bed is for relaxing us / waking us up, not rummaging around in a cupboard.
My downstairs hue lights are the non colour ones, they fade in and out via a hue routine, but as you say if you use alexa to turn them on they come one on the last used brightness. So you just have to say 'alexa kitchen light 100'.
I do also have a proper SAD lamp which I use when I do early morning turbo sessions, setup next to the TV screen. I find it helps me feel less knackered when I start
Thanks...going off the lightbulb idea as if its got a specific app my wife will just turn it off at the wall and then its a bit pointless 🙂
Looks like a basic hue setup is around £60 and bedside light £30-60 so going to keep looking at the options, a hue light strip to light up the wall behind the solid headboard is looking interesting though 🙂
Avoid hue rip off bulbs look on eBay and Amazon for cheaper versions that don't require a hub.
To be effective for SAD it is generally accepted that 10,000 lux from a white light source is necessary (at the eye). The spectrum is thought to be inconnsequential, it just needs to be white light. So if you're looking for an economical option - 10,000 Lux is the important bit to get right, not a daylight spectrum.
I bought Mrs Rider a Philips Golite Blu wakep/light therapy gizmo (short wave) which helps regulate the circadian cycle if used correctly. Unsure if the blue light also treats SAD, I'm guessing it depends on the primary cause of the altered mood?
I woke up 😡 as hell this morning. Took one coffee and then this at a decent volume. 5 seconds in I was giggling and ready to take on a whole day. If you have kids just buy them a guitar and amp. Do it!
Hey kids, would you like to play for granny after Sunday roast 🙂
