I did, never got a response though, suspect my specialist subjects were a bit too common (as in lots of folk would pick them)

That's what's annoys me most about mastermind - the daft specialist subjects and how ridiculously narrow they are. I often just wait until the second round before paying attention.
The other thing that I find annoying is the totally unnecessarily long questions. Some of them you could make into several paragraphs!

So, they only do each specialist subject once, every other series, so as not to repeat, so they might ask you to be a bit more specific. One guy asked for his subject to be ‘meat’, when that was vetoed, he wanted ‘pork’. He didn’t get on…
Some subjects are totally off limits, normally short run but popular TV series, as they’ve simply run out of stuff to ask.

That ^^ sounds too wide. Try narrowing it down to maybe just bottom brackets.
