He gone!
I remember seeing him speak at an event, absolutely captivated the audience for an hour. It was only when the organiser apologised for the lack of slides that we realised there should have been even more to his presentation.
Another character gone. RIP.
A true character. We’d only just been talking about him after a visit to Hamsterley forest (where he lived).
RIP, I remember his PG Tips promotional nature cards/posters in the late 70s (or early 80s?) getting me into the natural world before I watched David Attenborough TV programmes. Such an enthusiastic character, from what I remember of him on TV from back then.
He was a massive part of me pursuing science in tertiary education.
Im conflicted by his denial of global warming...
I will miss him though.
Ian
RIP.
Used to watch his programmes all the time.
Alledgedly my dad taught him to swim.
Yeah I remember a friend pointed out his house in hamsterley one time.
There were a group of us out that day, and the consensus was that he was indeed a lovely bloke IRL.
RIP.
A real character that genuinely loved his work.
I once saw him when he was the guest speaker at Timber Trades Dinner in Cambridge many years ago, and he basically told the audience of very drunk self important middle managers that they were all ***** and ruining the planet.
He was massively jeered but stuck to his guns, and I thought he was brilliant!
RIP
He certainly ended up with a very niche appeal.
Pro conservation and a massive inspiration to all things natural history to my generation but also oa climate change denier and a gammon (stood for election against John Major for the referendum party in 1997) before Farage was even warmed up.
I'd love to find an article where he explained his climate change theory and where he got his evidence from.
where he got his evidence from.
He didn't have any evidence and actually admitted that what he'd said about glaciers not shrinking was incorrect and made up. Because of being challenged and found out he said that he'd drop out of the climate debate but went back on his word and continued to use his fame to spread lies.
Sorry if that goes against the 'don't speak ill of the dead' theme, but the truth is sometimes uncomfortable............
but the truth is sometimes uncomfortable…necessary…
A sponsored by Ford sellout.
The obituries sounding a rueful tone for him today - bloke was brilliant on tv and a great communicator, but chose the path of the cabbage. A big missed opportunity all around.
Sad news. May he WIP.
Ha! @kennyp
I thought he was great when I was a kid shame he went a bit off piste but he'll have inspired half the climatologists he was railing against anyhoo
I was on Bellamy's Bugle when I was 7, I remember him as fun and friendly and someone who inspired an interest in nature. He bought the whole class chocolate cake with cream at the George Hotel in Edinburgh, except me. I got ice cream instead 😀
It was disappointing to hear his political views but hey ho. You can now catch me with the more progressive David Attenborough on Our Planet and on that C5 programme with Chris Packham and a guy from JLS, I'm well camouflaged in high viz
