I am planning a ride around Dartmoor and was hoping to ride the West to East bridleway north of the b3357. Does anyone know if it’s rideable?

Thanks
Rich

Do you mean the lich/lych way? I did it a few years back based on an article in the magazine. I’d say the open moors bit between powder mills and Peter tavy is about 50% rideable, and that was in bone dry conditions. there are far better places to ride on the moors.

where are you trying to get from/to?

Thank you for the message. I’m riding from the YHA at okaehampton and want to do a 35-45 mile loop on my rigid mountain bike ie not too technical.

Today? Good luck..

Not much rideable that crosses bit of moors E-W or N-S.

there is quite a good network of old military roads just south of you that’ll take you all the way up to high willhays and some other remote spots but nothing links through to the roads further south. It’s doable but you’ll be bog hopping

I agree with jam-bo, the ride in the mag is very tough, very wet, a lot of hike a bike and a bit of a bog fest. The timings to complete the ride are way off unless you are super fit. The directions are vague and Dartmoor can be very unforgiving. Having said all that there are good rides around Oakehampton up towards the Army base, out to Malden Quary and High Willhays.

Yep, as above, you can get quite far south from Okehampton on the military gravel roads, but then to link up with trails further south you have to go over bogs and mires.

I did a Dartmoor N-S route a few years ago, and it was only doable as it was an Easter when the weather was clear but very cold (-5 or so) so all the mires were frozen solid.

One link that isn’t ‘too bad’ is to drop from high willhays to dinger tor then Sandy Ford and then up to kitty tor where you can pick up the old railway to get you down towards the granite way and back to okehampton. It’s quite hike a bikey but doable. River might be high for a while today but it’ll drop quick.
