I like a good RPG and recently spotted Dark Souls 3 in a Steam sale (with plenty of 90% plus reviews); oh dear!

Now I'm not a hardcore gamer and a decidedly casual player (although I managed The Witcher 3 and all DLC on Deathmarch and really enjoyed Skyrim); Dark Souls 3 is brutal.

It may be an RPG, (I just haven't got far enough in to find out) but it plays like an arcade game where you have to fight your way through a level and defeat a boss to progress (enemies respawn after death).

DS3 is, apparently, know for its difficulty and has no difficulty settings if you're struggling; I've been unable to progress beyond the first level boss and am starting to get really frustrated.

The bosses do telegraph their moves but I guess that I'm just not good enough (usual comments on forums from the smug hardcores is "get gud!").

I was just wondering whether anyone had got into this game and whether it's worth persevering with (life's too short to spend hours winding myself up over it if that's all it's going to be)? If not what else is worth trying (fortunately is only cost me a tenner in the sale).

They’re notoriously difficult and yes no soft mode.

Daiblo series is pretty good and more like the Witcher,

Get gud!

I've played all the Dark Souls games and they are excellent but they take a while to learn the timing of the moves.

While you can't really cheat or use an easier mode don't be afraid to watch some youtube clips to help you get an idea how to defeat each boss.

There are two types of gamers, those who can beat a Dark Souls game and everyone else!

Its worth persevering - the elation you'll get when you finally make it through the horde and beat that boss you've been stuck on for a few hours make it well worth it!

You can grind and level up and become somewhat overpowered for lots of areas, but other areas remain hard no matter what equipment you have or what level you are.

Try different weapons too, you'll click with some and not others. My 60 year old mom is playing it (very slowly!) and does surprisingly well with heavy armour/shield and a massive great sword. I thought that set up would be too slow and useless, but it works well as you can just have a battle of attrition and soak up and dish out hits and just see who runs out of life first! Prefer light and agile myself.

I was in the same boat with DS1 when I got it, but as a series Dark Souls it's really worth getting into.

Thanks, I might give it another try.

There's a distinct lack of instructions too with the Steam download (it's all pretty bewildering) and I still haven't worked out how to level up, bit I think that I need to get beyond with first level boss Iudex Gundyr which is the current sticking point.

Good luck to your mum, she beats me by 10 years.

Get gud!

That ain't gonna happen but I might be able to get a bit better 🙂

The first time I bought Darksouls 3 I refunded it via Steam's "2 hour refund window" or whatever it is - I basically raged so hard.

Then my friend convinced me to have another go, and I realised it's a fantastic game. It's actually quite easy when you learn the mechanics - it's just that the mechanics are very different to anything else. Also, play with a xbox controller if you're on PC - it's much easier.

Once you learn the mechanics it's pretty easy, and you can cheese most mobs easily. Learn to dodge and get a shield with 100% block and you're flying.

The game is deliberately obtuse, but there is plenty online if you want to read into it. Just pick the warrior class (the dude with the sword and 100% block shield) and you're good to go.

The first boss is tough until you learn his attacks - watch how he telegraphs his attacks and dodge/block through them. Against logic, a lot of bosses are easier if you're super close to them as you can sidestep/dodge behind them so their attack misses. If you're further away the attacks arc will hit you.

oh yeah, lock on to your targets 🙂 Enemies tend to stay still once they start an attack so if you're locked on your just strafe left to sidestep around their attack arm and then the attack misses. (again, works better if you're super close, like kissing them close)

Its a great game, you can do it!

You can level up after Gundyr.

I cant remember which side, I think his right, but if you stick close to him at the correct side, he'll very rarely land a hit. As with all boss fights, keep moving and manage your stamina/defence - only hit when you have plenty of time to do so and can get back on the defensive before he attacks again.

IIRC, you can sprint to his 'fog gate' from the nearest bonfire without getting hit, so ignore the other enemies and just try different tactics to deal with him. Once you know how you'll wonder what the fuss was about. 🙂

You don't get any instructions with DS games regardless of platform. That's part of the 'hopeless' atmosphere they create I guess.

My only criticism of the "bastard hard" nature of the Dark Souls games is not being able to pause.

That just feels cheap.

Once you learn the basic gameplay mechanics it becomes a lot easier

Pretty much everything can be defeated by a combination of strafe right - block / dodge - light attack. You just need to learn the patterns of bosses and how to time your moves.

You will still die - a lot, but after you've got the basics you shouldn't feel "stuck"

A quick trial of the Knight class would suggest that this might be the best starting point for a Dark Souls newbie; they seem to be able to take a fair bit more abuse (I've traditionally liked lightly armoured agile classes but the Knight can still dodge and roll like a good 'un).

Pretty much everything can be defeated by a combination of strafe right – block / dodge – light attack.

That's good as I've given up on trying to time a kick reliably!

I shall persevere!

By the time you've finished 3 it'll be about time for the re-master of DS1 (end of may I think) - I remember this being far harder than 2 or 3, but a much better game overall.

They did the same for DS2 and it was great! I'd just finished 2 on the xbox 360 (with no DLC), and then got the re-master for the PS4 (cheaper to buy than buying the individual DLC for the 360) and thought I'd breeze through the standard game, but they changed all the enemy locations and types and made it a fresh challenge.

I've seen the remaster of Dark Souls 2 kicking about in various sales in the Xbox store.

I'd completed it on the 360 too, but if they have "remixed" it maybe it's worth a look

Pjay,

After this thread, I spent all weekend hiding from the ice and snow/slush and playing DS3!

Started a deprived and took a few goes at Gundyr, but muddled through.

Then realised I'd not finished the last DLC, so loaded up my main character and spent 13 hours getting through it! It's bull shit hard in areas, but fun.

Quick tip for a good shield, once you travel to the first area, the first posh looking knight you see with a spear and big shield is guarding a little area with some wooden raised walkways around it. Once past him look for a wooden chest (on the second level of walkway) with a hollow sat next to it. Be very carful when you attack the hollow, if you hit the chest it'll break and the shield will be gone! Once you get it, it's the earliest 100% block shield you can get. Makes life easier!

I'm still limping on but going very slowly. I might be a glutton for punishment but I don't like looking up cheats and walkthroughs online and do try and work things out for myself; however due to the total lack of instructions I have had to look up some of the game basics just to get going!

I tried out a few characters but went with the knight that seems a good beginners class (the sword, shield and armour seem good); normally I'd go for a thief or more lightly armoured and nimbler character but I just need to stay alive longer here.

I've managed to level up a bit (I just need more HP to stay alive!) and just play in short bursts to avoid getting to frustrated. It still feels much more an arcade game than an RPG to me but I'm still going. I'm currently exploring the High Wall of Lothric and beginning to realise that working out what you can run away from and avoid fighting might be a tactic for me!

As for the above "Git Gud" video, full marks to the fella but I just want a bit of casual gameplay fun; I'd have not hair left trying that!

Don't deny yourself online help.

You won't be cheating. You will just be getting guidance, and I can guarantee you will miss out on so much from the game that you really need to be told about.

All SoulsBorne games are like this. The lore and complexity is such there are parts of the game that you just won't touch without knowing they are there. Archdragon Peak being a prime example.

Also, if you get stuck, summon a Sun Bro to come give you a hand. Don't know what a Sun Bro is? Go online and find out 😉

Also, running is a great strat.

Random bump for this - did you persevere PJay? I picked up the DS 1 remaster at Christmas and loving it, what a superb game. Not that difficult really when your reference point is Jet Set Willy, although no doubt 1 or 2 bosses have been brutal to get past (Capra demon took loads of attempts). Just through the mid-game at the mo.

Can someone explain some really basic pvp stuff to me? I am in the darkmoon covenant and have the blue orb. I can use that to invade a world of the guilty and it looks straightforward - has been taking an age to find people but when it does it's me v them, fine. Sometimes, though, the guilty party has a friend as a white phantom who gets in the mix? This happens more if I wear the ring of the darkmoon covenant, invade dark Anor Londo and it's a bit of a crowd scene. One player (normal looking) who is the host of the world, plus he's got two mates as white or golden phantoms who gang up on me and give me a pasting. What is happening here?

Anyone played Demon Souls? Now that I would describe as bastard hard. I accidentally used wrath of god in the nexus. This caused a everyone to attach me and I basically lost 30 hours of progress 😕

I did and got on reasonably well (though arguably over-levelled). However, I've taken a break as I was getting really frustrated with a couple of bosses I couldn't get through.

I may revisit at some point.

I got this just before red dead came out and got very frustrated and gave up on 1st boss! Then red dead arrived and I was happy to just play that instead.

The regions in DS1 are just astounding; I only played it once through several years ago and those levels are still beyond anything I've seen in the intervening time, in terms of grandeur and immersion.
It's been a while since I've played but... there's a covenant in which players are pulled in to protect other players who are being attacked by another player (if you see what I mean). So it's possible you have that happening?

DO NOT USE A MOUSE AND KEYBOARD!

Seriously it's badly ported to the PC, you must use a gamepad otherwise you'll have a horrible experience. Once you get to grips with it, it's strangely compelling especially beating the bosses. And yes Git Gud!

Ha just saw the age of the OP! Hopefully you figured that bit out!
