Dark Sky app replacement?

So it seems Apple are End-of-life ing the excellent dark sky app. It's been a massive boon for planning rides and trips away over the last few years - mainly down to the rain rader (is this rain going to pass in a few minutes or is it here for hours? is this as heavy as it's getting? and shit, theres heavy rain heading this way ABORT!)

Apple Weather has rain radar but only has the hour by hour forecast for the next 5 hours and no detail on precipitation at all on future days. Knowing that theres an 80% chance of rain 'tomorrow' is very different from a forecast that tells you it's all done by 9am and the rest of the day is very likely going to be dry.

the level of detail darksky include just isn't the sort thing apple build into their apps so I figure it's time to get something else.

What's the best alternate (on an iPhone)

I went through this agony when Dark Sky was ended for Android a few years ago. I just went with the paid version of AccuWeather.
I'm sure there's an iOS version.

The built-in weather app is getting a bunch of new stuff straight out of Darksky with iOS16.

https://www.macrumors.com/guide/ios-16-weather/

Should be able to update to ios16 today.

The hourly forecast is pretty much the dark sky info in a different format in iOS16. TBH I'll prob cancel my (in)accuweather sub now.

Not an iOS user but the android version of meteoblue seems pretty good

https://apps.apple.com/us/app/meteoblue-weather-maps/id994459137

Hourly forecasts by day, plus rain radar with prediction over the next couple of hours, multimodel views etc

Also use Meteogram to replace the yr.no widget which gives a very customisable view of the forecast, include whatever parameters from whatever sources you like (if you pay)

Try Ventusky. Very good rain radar. On iOS and Android.

I've been a Dark Sky user for a few years after someone on here recommended it and have been happy with it. But like zilog6128 I have just updated the ios and launched the weather app and I am impressed with it.

Should I install iOS 16 or is it still a risk?

YR is a great free weather App. It’s free so you can’t go wrong trying it. It’s based on the Norwegian state weather models. You get hour by hour rain in mms

When Apple killed it on Android I went with Shadow Weather. But it sounds like you're sorted on IOS - which I guess is why Apple bought it in the first place.

I don’t normally install the initial release but there were a few things I was keen to try - automatically isolating the subject of a photo is pretty cool! - there are a few reports of various bugs but nothing major that I can see.

I’ve used WeatherProHD pretty much since it was first released for iOS, which I think was either for the iPhone 3G or 4, and I’ve always been very impressed with it. I’d never bothered with Dark Sky, but thought I’d give it a try after Apple bought it, just to see what it could do to the native Weather app, which I was never impressed with. I have to say it started to get a lot of use, so it was roughly 50/50 between WeatherProHD and Dark Sky.

I installed iOS 16 last night, and Weather looks pretty good so far. It’ll definitely replace Dark Sky, and after more than ten years, it may replace WeatherProHD, which I pay a subscription to, to get hourly forecasts.

I’ll leave it for a bit, to see how things shape up, but I like the idea of just one app for getting accurate weather forecasts.

Updated to ios16 today - I've used Dark Sky for years and the new native Weather app seems really good.

Not had any issues with anything else so far.

iOS 16 has been in public beta for a few months now. Unless you’ve got a very non-vanilla use case you should be fine.
I installed the latest beta today and weather app is looking good 👍

I've always used Rain Today on my iphone for viewing if I am going to get rained on. Always been very accurate

On ios16 there is this function within it?

So have been using Apple weather for the last couple of months and it sure is no DarkSky - the rain forecast is hidden some clicks down, you can't get rain probability by the hour (so I'm getting no rain showing in the app while it's raining with super low probability for the whole day - and that was a heavy hail storm on Sunday)

For riding it was the hour by hour probability that was the real win in Dark Sky (can you tell I don't like riding in the rain?)

have just downloaded every weather app I can find recommended. Will report back.

WeatherPro and WeatherRadar look interesting. WeatherRadar has hour by hour rain probability - and interestingly is showing 40% chance of rain for the next few hours (and all of the next few days), whereas Apple weather is telling me the next rain is going to be on Tuesday.

Full of ads though and £8.50 a year to remove them

No it's rubbish. Apple replaced a good thing with a bad thing.

Funny that, I was looking at a replacement for apple weather last night. I too found DarkSky incredibly accurate - wheras apple is just crap. Heavy rain is just darker blue, and the way it averages it means small intense showers barely show up at all.

Metoffice has rain radar, but it's not exactly granular.

So interested in what folks are using.

Weather Underground https://www.wunderground.com/ on the pc and Android mobile for real time and on the day forcecast, uses a net of stations, at home there are several within 1 mile. Depends on upkeep and setup of stations by people, but given many areas have a number of stations, rogue stations usually stand out a mile.

If you google weather on your phone it gives you hour by hour precip % and quantity. Doesn't give quantity on laptop oddly.

I tried a few after Dark Sky was killed off and settled on using Rain Today instead which seems pretty good
