Love my Hobgoblin, but find it a bit hit and miss depending on the batch, I guess. Just had a really good London Porter, what other good dark beers am I missing ?

There are the world of good stouts and porters available these days. I'll just big up two of my local ones, Bristol Beer Factory's Milk Stout and Bath Ales' Dark Side. Both lovely. Though, with a whiff of Spring in the air, I won't really be drinking them again much this year.

DD suggests good ale there.
And also another good suggestion, go local. Get to your local brewery and try their dark beer.

All the more reason to avoid being like the post-hibernation "blonde" drinkers, and get stuck into the dark stuff... #niche

I do like old P ( of course) but at 5.7% I tend to just have the one and move on to something a little less brain melting.

Funnily enough... I probably need to look in the mirror a bit more, out on a ride somebody mentioned the the ride leader had a beard to someone and they pointed to me and said oh is it him.. I had no idea that I need a shave that badly ( I was not leading the ride)

.....Now clean ( ish ) shaven

The Oak Smoked (green label) one was the best.

Mmmmm.....Smoked Beer

It was surprisingly nice. The Oak one is only made at Christmas so it might be harder to find later in the year. The standard one is beechwood smoked. It was a bit rougher but still nice. The Oak is about 8% iirc so only a couple are needed 🙂

CFH has it. Mikkeller Beer Hop/Geek Breakfast is a damn fine beverage. One of the finest...ever.

Salopian Black-Ops and Kernal Export Indian Porter are pretty nice too in a similar vein.

For a more regular tipple Hawkshead Brodie's Prime

I love dark beers me.

Hobgoblin is a favourite, Dark Lord is nice, Black sheep obviously.

My favourite though is Holts 'Black'
http://www.joseph-holt.com/beers/type/keg

Only ever get it in the Black Dog in Belmont but I love just sitting there smacking my lips like an old man. Sticky, tasty and wonderful.

Some crackers up above. Tempest Red Eye Flight and Chipotle porter are great. Mikkeler Texas Ranger is awesome as is the Beer Geek Brunch Weasel.

Cromarty beers are almost all good. Brewed Awakening and the new Ghost Town Porter are great (Rogue Wave is the only one I'm not keen on).

[img] [/img]

If you want to try dark and smokey I like this one.

Hobgoblin used to be one of my favorite beers but it's gone to rat shit since Wychwood were taken over by Marstons 👿

Loads of great beers been suggested, but my favorite beer of all time is Old Peculiar served by a grough Lakland bloke, supped by the fire in the ODG after a day walking / climbing in Langdale. Bliss!

Cheers,
Jamie

😀

A number of years ago, a friend and I decided last minute to do a winter 3 peaks (yorkshire). We headed over on the Friday night and were about to head to bed early in our B&B after a quick pint of OP, when in walked a dozen girls on a hen night. Bearing in mind this was a miserable February night in a tiny b&b in the Dales, we thought we'd hit the jackpot!

Long story short, we stayed up drinking with them until about 3am. I'd had about 10 pints of OP (!!!) and awoke to my alarm at 6am. After emptying my stomach of OP and the room of two "guests", we decided (still drunk) to crack on with our adventure.

25 miles and 11 hours later, I arrived back at the B&B a broken man. I think I sobered up on top of Penyghent, in a whiteout, and realised what a silly idea it was 🙂

I love OP!

😆 Nice one Peter, what a great story! Getting anything done after that much OP, left alone the 3 Peaks is a great achievement!

Cheers,
Jamie

Most of the Spanish brands are starting to make them. The Carrefour variety isn't bad, either, certainly has a bit more flavour than the usual lager.

Waen's Chilli Plum Porter was tasty, just a gently buzz on the tongue!

Einstock's toasted porter is yummy.

Acorn Brewery Gorlovka or Old Moor Porter, award winning beers

Slightly biased as my mate owns the brewery, if ever in Barnsley Old No 7 is a proper pub with a good range of both Acorn beers and Guests

OP seems to have changed its recipe since the mid '90's, I swear it had more of a sweeter taste than it does nowadays, although that could be down to my tastebuds maturing I suppose.

Im a big fan of Youngs Double Chocolate Stout and Fuller Black Cab Stout is wonderful.
I've struggles to find a Porter I really like, either i've never had a truly good one (unlikely) or its just a style that hasn't clicked with me. I'll keep trying in the interests of research though....

I find there's a very fine line with porters from being everso too roasty and too toffeey-caramelly.

I'll keep trying in the interests of research though....
That's the spirit!

Cheers,
Jamie

+1 for Ringwood Old Thumper. Easy to get as most Supermarkets sell it and a bit more 'approachable' since they dropped the ABV from 5.6 to 5.1

That Augustiner Dunkel up there^^^ is very nice indeed.

Youngs Double Choc, and Innis+Gun Rum Finish round out my top 3 beers on untappd.

Off to see what local beers I can find...
