Surely there's no way to survive this?
How on earth could somebody post this without once thinking there might be consequences.

Jesus, that is so, so wrong. I like the guy on radio but that is a serious line crossed.
I find him intolerable on the radio but I didn't realise he was that much of an arsehole
Oh Christ, this isn't going to end well. He's going to get taken out by a range rover soon
Or:
- Man posts photo, thinking it funny but not realising implication
- Man has implication pointed out to him
- Man apologises (twice) and retracts photo
tough to not realise the implications in this day and age...
He is a national treasure and I hope he doesn't get the sack.
If Tommy yaxley Lennon had posted it though I'd be calling for him to be strung up.
Funny old world.
Or:

You're kidding, right?
But obviously unintentional.
Chimplications, surely?
Meh.... It's all a bit "I'm offended" snowflake. If that's what offends you please don't watch the news, there's some real sh!t going on out there.
Oh, don't get me wrong, he's going to get roasted for it, but such is the age of Internet Anger.
An honest misjudgement, an honest apology, I don't know what more he can do.
You’re kidding, right?
No, why?
"Once again. Sincere apologies for the stupid unthinking gag pic earlier. Was supposed to be joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted. Royal watching not my forte."
An honest misjudgement, an honest apology, I don’t know what more he can do.
It was a stupid thing to post but agree that should be an end of it. Of course it won't be, the offence athletes will be reposting the idiotic tweet forever without any mention of the prompt retraction and apology.
You genuinely believe he didn't know the racist connotations of what he was posting?
I'm sure there was no racist intent, but a stunning lack of judgement on display there.
You genuinely believe he didn’t know the racist connotations of what he was posting?
I refer you to my previous posts, make your own judgement.
It took me a minute to think about the race thing, tbh. As soon as I saw royals I thought inbreeding.
He’s never come across as that type of guy has he? At the same time, for somebody who one would think has his finger on some kind of pulse of popular culture and the moral zeitgeist of our time, that is an incredibly stupid post.
Reminds me of Roy Hodgson’s simian metaphor during (I think) a half time team talk to the England football team with multiple black and mixed heritage players in the dressing room. IIRC, he was mostly forgiven for that.
I've never picked up any other implication of racism from Danny Baker so i'd give him a pass.
Very poorly executed “piss take/joke”
Of all people in the media world right now, he should act more responsibly with foresight and compassion.
On the other hand, since mid 2016, it seems we can all air our internal monologues without reprisals or indignation.
He’s a very well respected and intelligent Journo/Jockey, seems like a very odd thing to do.
He will get roasted for it, despite his apology.
He once visited Michael Jackson in Neverland and wrote an amazing, glowing report in the the NME. So he's probably a racist and a nonce too eh.
Racism? ****ing hell.
I had to work it through and would not have done until I saw it was causing a kerfuffle - possibly because of my anti royals viewpoint and knowing he thinks similarly I saw it only one way until I gave it more thought.
I went....... royal family = performing monkeys, next little insta-celeb performing monkey has been born ready to entertain the great unthinking unwashed.....very funny......oh hang on......'monkey'.......never crosses my mind but those nasty racists use it as an insult.........sharp intake of breath.
Took me several seconds to make the racism connection. On the face of it it's like one of those not very funny birthday cards they sell everywhere. Though I see now why this one might not make the collection.
Could there even be a positive thing of 'monkey' tropes being left behind to the extent they don't even enter the mind? This would be good wouldn't it and is clearly what's happened here?
Amazingly crass though from a bright person with media/football/London working class connections (I score zero out of three which is my excuse for being slow). So yeah. Burn him.
(Opened this thinking oh no he's not got cancer again. Hey ho.)
OK so could me I am a bit slow on the uptake but I didn't consider any racist side to this picture until it was mentioned above.
+1 for not getting the conotation until explained in here.
TBH I looked at that and just saw a monkey and didn't initally realise the reason for the outrage. Once I'd made the connection there was a bit of an "ooooh" moment.
I can see some groups being outraged, but I don't think someone in the public eye would post something like that with the inention of being racist if they didn't want their career to plummet.
Ill judged for sure in retrospect but sometimes, a monkey is just a monkey....or in this case, an ape,
If it had been a dog or a wallaby or a baby llama instead it would have been hilarious rather than cringeworthy.
Pitchforks away.
I'm not racist but... neither is Danny Baker I very strongly presume and therefore mistake or "miss-taken"?
The name gave away playing cards and Bob Marley was the king of spades.
There's no way I would have thought anything odd about it if it wasn't for the outrage that followed.
I saw it as a circus act rather than a racist thing too.
Ill judged rather than racist IMO.
I can see some groups being outraged, but I don’t think someone in the public eye would post something like that with the inention of being racist if they didn’t want their career to plummet.
i suppose this must be true, surely no one is stupid enough to think he will be able to get away with it?
either way itll have the tommy robinson fans cheering
Just seen his statement on the BBC website. Seems fair enough and should be left at that.
£10 says that the Beeb suspend him on the same day that Farage gets yet another hour or so to broadcast his bile on QT.
I thought it was racist within less than a second. However I don't imagine Danny Baker is racist and this would be pretty blatant way of showing it.
+1 for not getting the conotation until explained in here.
+2 on that. I just thought of the circus / performance angle as per the posts above.
I didn't view it as racist but I'm switched on enough to see how it wouldn't end well (footballers, bananas, chimp noises etc).
No doubt it was an honest mistake however he is in the public eye with a huge following so therefore he should be very aware of things like this. He should know better, that is his responsibility as a public broadcaster.

Danny Baker has been to enough Millwall gammes to know the connotations
It would have been funnier if it was an orangutan.
He's been doing the "Circus Animals Dressed As Famous People" thing for years. It was a regular feature on TFI Friday which he was the writer on.
+2 on that. I just thought of the circus / performance angle as per the posts above.
+3. I just thought it was unfunny until I got to the 12th post on here.
BBC news update
He's just been fired from Radio 5
Really didn’t see any racism there.
Sorry, I think it was a simple misjudgement.
Harsh.
Gutted - love his 5 Live show on a Saturday morning
Been fired now.
Been fired now.
How utterly ridiculous.
Should sue for wrongful dismissal.
And he’s gone...
What an idiot.
Not sure the BBC reacted in the right way though. If he meant it to be an attention grabbing appeal to racists, then he'll be on Question Time next week… but I strongly expect he did not.
Seems since the Johnathan Ross/Brand affair the Beeb is very intolerant.
Really didn’t see any racism there.
Sorry, I think it was a simple misjudgement.
This; it took me a while to see the racist implications too (although they're huge once you get it) and I'd have probably missed it altogether if I hadn't seen this thread. For me it's all about the intent and I really don't think that he intended to be racist but the damage (to him and others) has already been done.
It seems a very harsh, if entirely predictable, outcome to me (the Beeb being more concerned with its own corporate image to do the right thing).
Having said that, in this day and age you really do need to think about what you post and he clearly didn't.

He'll be lucky, I'm sure that the BBC will have something in their contract about social media behaviour.
He's either racist or incredibly naïve, as I said before he's been to enough Millwall games to know what it means.
Not just us white middle class keyboard warriors upset- a lot of people on twitter relating it to their own experience of monkey chants etc at them.
Absolutely bloody ridiculous.
What time is Farage on TV tonight?
What a funny world we live in.
a lot of people on twitter..
Any of them members of the royal family?
What a funny world we live in.
Pretty much the opposite, it seems.
I really like his show on a Saturday morning. Listen to it every week. He doesn't strike me as the type of bloke who would be racist or advocate a racist point of view at all.
He's clearly done something daft on social media without thinking through the implications. Who hasn't? So thats now a sacking offence? But of course it is. The professionally offended bedwetters must be pandered too at all costs, and their delicate ickle sensibilities fully respected.
The only good thing to come of this is that we know, thank to his parting Tweet, that he favours red sauce on his sausage sandwiches and has therefore gone down quite significantly in my estimation
Seems since the Johnathan Ross/Brand affair the Beeb is very intolerant.
BBC fired Iain Lee for calling a woman 'homophobic' and' bigotted' on air.
I don't think that Baker is racist. I did however think that as a savvy and intelligent media personality he would have been aware of the usage of apes/monkeys etc as a derogatory image, god knows it's had enough news coverage, and that as a football fan he'd have been aware of the current actions around spectators imitating apes.
My initial thoughts were that he's done this as a bit of a stunt to raise his profile, with a roadmap to back his way out of it.
I could be wrong though- there's a lot of folk on here defending the innocence of his post. Although I don't understand why the need to say it was ill advised if it was innocent?
The only good thing to come of this is that we know, thank to his parting Tweet, that he favours red sauce on his sausage sandwiches and has therefore gone down quite significantly in my estimation
Tommy supporters will really latch on to that.
As another poster said, he's been doing chimpanzees dressed as celebrities for years without any action by the Beeb. I can see how its been interpreted and why he's been fired but think it's a bit sad and must be someone wanting his brand of humour and independent thinking off in favour of a more modern younger presenter. I'm against racism but just think it's not been looked at in the context it's an absurd image which pokes fun at two new parents and shows them as ordinary Joes like the rest of us when it comes to the nuts and bolts of reproducing etc.
He’s clearly done something daft on social media without thinking through the implications. Who hasn’t? So thats now a sacking offence?
I haven't. But if I did I could be sacked yes as where I work has a strong social media policy.
I also would not have posted that image as it is clear to me that it could come across as racist.
Not a lot of support for him on his Twitter feed.
Should sue for wrongful dismissal
Really?
- Do you not think the BBC contract will be explicit about responsibility to be aware of issues relating to under represented groups
- Do you think think he would have been on endless BBC training courses on race and social awareness
-Do think he is oblivious to the ape connection (as discussed above, he goes to Millwall matches)
- Do you not think that, as a prominent, public facing employee of a publicly funded national broadcaster, he has a responsibility to be informed and considered in his actions?
Of course he needed to be sacked
FWIW, doesn't seem racist to me.
I'm not surprised they've sacked him, I think they've wanted rid of home for a while, he's not afraid to criticise or poke fun at the BEEB on his show. Bit there's a lot of hypocrisy in the media, certain outlets will suggest racist undertones around this relationship where probably none exist and will now jump on Danny for this. I don't think he's racist and I'll miss his 5live show, it's one of the highlights of my week.
Been fired now.
How utterly ridiculous.
Indeed.
You cannot really use Farage as a baseline in this argument, simply because he’s not “employed” by the BBC.. Farage is simply a spokesperson for a group of people and not representing the BBC and being paid for services therein.
seems pretty obvious that he broke the BBC rules
https://www.bbc.co.uk/editorialguidelines/guidance/social-networking-personal/guidance-full
racist or not he was an idiot for posting it & his reaction of calling people who thought it was racist as having a 'disseased mind' was also stupid
To the people who say this doesn't seem racist, it doesn't matter in the slightest whether you see it as racist or not. It does however matter very much to those who are offended by it. The use of chimps as a tool in racism is long standing and well established. If you cannot see how this can be viewed as racist then I am afraid you are both naive and out of touch.
'ang on... I've not actually seen this "royal baby".. is it a brown one* then?
*c/o Waynetta Slob
royal + baby + preceivable as racist jibe + vulnerable bbc = P45
unfortunate but probably inevitable
It does however matter very much to those who are offended by it. T
for sure and that's probably what's missing from discussion on here - people who've been on the receiving end
I thought it was immediately obvious how this could be taken badly.
I appreciate he probably didn't mean it in that way, however it was a really dumb post to make considering all aspects of it.
Personally it should be a big slap on the wrists, however he must have known the rules he signed up to, so bad luck really. Maybe people should just think more before they post online
It does however matter very much to those who are offended by it.
Has anyone been offended by it? Who?
He's been sacked.

He’s been sacked
and that Joe Cocker's not looking too healthy
If you cannot see how this can be viewed as racist then I am afraid you are both naive and out of touch.
Just because something can be construed as having offensive connotations does not mean it has offensive intent. Utterly ridiculous knee-jerk reaction.
There's a different type of "offended" these days - 'I'm not offended really, but I think I'm supposed to be, so I am!'
He’s been sacked.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48212693/blockquote >Yep, and Roger Moore is dead!
Also didn't get the racist angle until I read more of the thread. In fact, I didn't even know she was mixed race until I just Googled her. I didn't know she was an actress either.
I won't miss him as I don't really listen to radio but I did like that show that was based on him that Pater Kaye was in...
Yep, and Roger Moore is dead!
Still?
A high court judge writes:
I didn’t even know she was mixed race... I didn’t know she was an actress either.I won’t miss him as I don’t really listen to radio…
The use of chimps as a tool in racism is long standing and well established.
Equally, the use of chimps or other primates as a stand in for people with no racist overtones is also well established. E.g the Discworld Librarian, or the PG tips adverts (animal welfare concerns aside)
If you cannot see how this can be viewed as racist then I am afraid you are both naive and out of touch.
Agreed...but, If you cannot see how this could have been intended without racist intent then you’re equally naive.
As I said, massively ill judged but in my opinion, most likely without real malice.
There’s a different type of “offended” these days – ‘I’m not offended really, but I think I’m supposed to be, so I am!’
Who gets to decide what constitutes the right sort of offended?
I've just had to Google who Prince Harry's wife is to find out why it's so offensive.
It's ill thought out and he should know better. Not racist though.
