So, me & Mrs HTO went dancing tonight. Mother-in-law bought us 4 lessons of ballroom/Latin.

I have to say, despite myself, I really enjoyed it.

We've watched 'Strictly' as a family (3 generations) for years, but I've never seen myself as a dancer, 2 left feet, not being able to string together more than 3 steps, getting the coordination and timing all wrong. Now, I'm not saying I'm a natural, and if it was a choice between riding and dancing, it'd be no contest. But all in all, it was good fun, and I might even go back for the next 3 classes.

Who else dances? 🕺

A few years back the GF convinced me to go to some Latin dance class. She still regrets it. Her feet were black and blue after about ten minutes.

I've done developed my own, unique style of solo dance that can be practiced in a small space, usually early morning whilst she is still in bed.

I dance with my dog in the kitchen. I'm pretty good but frankly he's got two left feet.

So ... just me then?

Realise its not likely to be a popular secondary hobby on an MTB forum, but did think there would be a few closet dancers!

Yes, it was good fun and our teacher was fully qualified so he got the best out of what little talent was in his class :O)
We took ballroom and latin classes, this included a bit of jive and Lindyhop. Even during lockdown we carried on with 'zoom' classes. This was tricky as our house has small rooms.

The videos were interesting, a bit like riding a massive drop or skiing down a black, one felt at the time that you were flying, but the result on film looks a bit dull and flat :o)

Enjoy.

for years my wife did Ceroc, french invention based around jive/lindyhop type steps. She tried to persuade me to go a few times but I was keen we did things separate to each other so we didn't end up in each others pockets and had our own hobbies (and I didn't want her spoling my MTBing 😉 )  I kind of regret it now.

Naturally we went to a few weddings around that time including our own, even if not her Ceroc friends, there were always a few that could do it. Ceroc being a franchise thing is taught much the same all round the place so you could pretty easily dance with a stranger as you knew the same moves and cues, and I admit to being a bit jealous that she could just go up to someone with no embarrassment, or feeling of treading on a girlfriends' toes, and ask them to dance and then really enjoy the dance for the sake of the dance rather than a form of courtship. She also learned to dance male parts and could then lead another girl, so used to love the evening do's rather than stand at the bar making idle chit chat.

TLDR - go for it, a great skill to have and because so many absolutely can't do it, you don't even need to be that good for people to look at you and go 'Wow!'  Which having said it's not a courtship thing, can also be a courtship thing if you want it to be!

I also used to work with a remarkable girl. Slovakian born (was Czechoslovakia at the time), family skipped the country before the fall of the iron curtain, spent time as a refugee in Italy and then eventually because of her mum's work moved to NZ where she grew up as a NZ girl.

Then as a kid from a faraway place in NZ used to spend a lot of time with her brother and with his friends, so cycling, skating, snowboarding and so on, and then took up ballroom. Then work eventually brought her to the UK where I worked with her.

CALSS, she was so totally understated, rarely mentioned her talents but then they'd surface in conversation or in odd ways.

eg: So one day someone was showing their winter holiday snaps, got into a discussion, revealed a lot of knowledge on the subject eventually to the point that she was a sponsored rider BITD in NZ and #2 NZ female freestyler or something.

So to ballroom, similar to my previous post..... we were at a European sales meeting and the french team were all up and dancing at an evening do, and Katie gets up to 'join in'. Only to be absolutely, stunningly amazing. Others were good, had a lot of moves, etc., but she was just so crisp. There was no in between, an arm went from there, to there, without seeming to move from one to the other. Just amazing. One of the guys picked up on this and had done a bit of ballroom and so they started doing some other styles through the evening. In the way that you can put a fat, scruffy bloke into a well made suit and they then look good - take an average dancer and put him with an international class partner and the result was astonishing. Because as she later revealed, yes, she was also top class in latin and ballroom in NZ BITD.

I really want to learn swing/Lindyhop having seen a bunch of it on Instagram. I like how it doesn’t seem to need high heels! Future husband has already agreed to come with me to some local lessons… we’ve never actually danced together, even at a night out! What if he dances like a dad? Or, worse, throws giant interpretive shapes?!

We rock and roll danced for years, then I hurt my shoulder, then the group got smaller, then came Covid. Hmmm.

Started in ceroc, progressed to West coast swing, blues. Go for it, it's good fun, and singing to do when the weather is not so good

Not with my knees. Plus, I have absolutely shit sense of rhythm. I can nod in time to the music, though…

Years ago I did a bit of Tango. The proper Buenos Aries stuff mind, none of that flashy mock Latin/Ballroom rubbish.
