My loft has the usual itchy bastard glass fibre insulation, but it seems to be suffering a LOT of condensation.
I've been doing some reading which suggests its due to lack of air movement, which can be improved with lap vents. Living on the south coast Im a little nervous of tinkering with the roof, does anyone have any words of wisdom about the whole lap vent approach?
I'd start by checking your existing eaves ventilation isn't blocked. Can't see any real harm in adding lap vents, though.
Firstly check your insulation doesn't go right upto the eves of the roof. This could prevent air flowing from the soffits and into the loft space. I've just recently topped up my loft insulation and checked this and on some runs they were tucked right into the end so I cut a few inches off the length to allow good ventilation.
Do as recommended above, the vents do help
Check the seal on your loft hatch and make it better if needed. Warm moist air rises, leaks though the gap and condenses in the cold space of your attic.
I had a loft which suffered bad condensation. Inside felt was dripping wet. Cleaning the soffit vents solved it. It’s all about airflow up there.
We had this; ultimately it was cured by replacing the roof membrane (waited until we needed a lot of work doing on the roof)
