I have tended to use monthlies, and because I don't actually wear them every day, keep wearing them for well over a month before throwing them out.

I would love to move to dailies, though, and am wondering if it is possible to fall asleep with them in and not destroy your eyeballs.

Say, for example, I only put them in for the evening because I decide to go for a ride after work, and then come hoe and fall asleep. If I stay asleep, and don't take them out until the next day some time, am I putting my eyes in danger?

Just wondering before I indulge....

EDIT: I would welcome people's comments regarding the differences (benefits/disadvantages) between them.

Not really recommended overnight if you can help it. Dailies are much thinner than monthlies and consequently easier to damage. I've used both for years, Monthlies most of the time, but using dailies for surf trips. (yes I take them out straight after coming out of the water.) Trying Ortho-K at the moment, but that's a whole different thing.

depends if you like peeling a dried out contact lens off your eyeball. that was my last experience of falling asleep with dailies in.

I use 30 day lenses now, rarely sleep in them but can still do so if I want to.

I've accidentally slept in mine a few times and my eyes haven't fallen out yet, but it's obviously not recommended. Very bizarre waking up and being able to see.

It's probably nearly two decades since I've worn contacts that you have to clean but that's the only difference I can remember.

Just continue as you're doing, but chuck them after a month.

Personally, I use extended wear (30days) but recently have been wearing my glasses more. Plan was to use up my current pack of extended wear and then just buy dailies to use as and when. Thing is, I find my extended wear ones more comfy, so thinking I might just keep using extended wear and just leave them in soak when not using and bin them at the end of the month.

My monthlies are OK for sleeping in occasionally (and was told so by my optician) only ever done it rarely though.

As other with dailies I've accidentally fallen a sleep in them - usually when coming home slightly the worse for wear.

Most of the time it's OK - but occasionally they'll be really dry and not want to come out - or come out in 2 pieces which is slightly disconcerting and painful when trying to get the last bit out. I've also had it where it had slipped and gone to one side which was also awkward.

Better off not doing it IMHO.

I don't think i've ever been so tired that I couldn't make the effort to take out my daily contact lenses. It takes seconds and there's no additional faff afterwards with cleaning or storage. Just chuck them in the bin.

I've also never fallen asleep whilst wearing my glasses.

My optician (trusted Indy rather than a big chain a la VE/SS) said don't do it - and then being pragmatic, followed up with 'but if you do, don't try and remove them straight away - leave them in for another quarter / half an hour to allow the eye to lubricate them again, or put some saline drops in and wait a few mins'

No harm done here - after nearly 40 years of various types and more than the odd 40 winks.

Who said anything about being tired? Think SaxonRider = think lazy

If I could get away with it, I wouldn't shave, clip my nails, or comb my hair either.

Ah! That explains that time your wife found you sitting in a chair in front of  the fire, crying your eyes out.

"SaxonRider, Whatever is the mattter?" she said.

The reply, muffled by sobs......."I'm burning" 😉

we used to have a dog that lazy - we've dragged him away from the fire with the smell of scorched fur in our nostrils and he still managed to look affronted.

Quite often have a power nap in them !

Not really recommended overnight ..give them a day off occasionally..to give your eyes a bit of a break ..both eyes still intact after 20 years plus of wearing them ..

I had a thought a little while ago that maybe flushing them down the loo as I used to wouldn't be particularly friendly to marine life ..so I collect them in a small pile / ball and stick them into the recycling bin now !😁

I've woken up before now, with the feeling of something in my eye - only to realise my contacts (daillies)are in......

Don't do this.  The 'month' thing doesn't mean 31 days of wear, it means 31 calendar days since you open them.  I originally thought the former until an optician put me right.

Re lenses - by far the best are extended wear 30 day ones, IMO.  Most of the time I just forget about them altogether.  My optician has suggested taking them out once a week, but sometimes it's every two weeks for me.  No eye issues at any of my 6 monthly checkups over the 15 or so years I've had them.

Highly recommended if you can ahve them.

My g/f falls asleep wearing her reading glasses quite regularly! I have gone to sleep wearing my contacts, basically because I just forgot I was wearing them and got home late! I wouldn’t make a habit of it, they do feel a bit sticky for a while but are soon ok, but I take them out when practical. Soft extended wear lenses were sold in the States for a while, but wearers started suffering from severe eye infections, so it never caught on here.

My optician (an independent who is also a friend and fellow cyclist) told me it was fine when I asked him about this. They wear away gradually and start to feel gritty - there’s no risk of infection unless you’re not looking after them properly.

I wear my monthly lenses for a week at a time 24 hours a day. Take them out for 2 days and then wear for another week. Optician is happy with my hygiene regimem as they have put me on annual check-ups instead of 6 monthly.

These are high water contact topic lenses.
