Struggling big time for a gift for my old man, so thought I'd come to the place where old people are made!

He lives abroad and I'll be flying over, so it has to fit in my hand luggage. He loves his rugby (my step-mum has got him 6 Nation tickets) and also 60/70s rock (Thin Lizzy, The Who etc).

No idea too stupid!

I fly out on the 19th June!

Take him out for a nice meal when you get there too.

I think the meal's a given, but always a nice touch.

He's old school, so signed autographs aren't really his bag. Thanks any way.

No worries. My FIL is a big cricket fan, we took him on a visit to Lords Cricket ground for his birthday (70th). Had a great day out, we also got him a really nice bottle of whiskey from a local specialist. Not sure of your dads taste but something like that may be nice.

Are there things he likes doing which you could do together, hike etc ? That way you have a gift and a memory ? How about doubling up on the 6 Nations match with something around the same weekend ?

The tour sounds like a good idea, but scuppered by the fact he doesn't live in the UK.

He likes his wine, but then again he lives in a wine producing village so difficult to know what I'd bring to the party!

Dad's are tough to buy for!

For my father's 60th birthday, I took him to Barcelona for the weekend. We saw Barcelone play Valencia and otherwise spent our time eating and boozing.

For his 65th birthday, I bought him a case of decent Malbec and a decanter from which to enjoy it.

Best ideas I've ever had for him - usually he gets the proverbial selection of socks.

@Jambalaya - good thinking, plus it means I won't need to shell out for something until next Jan / Feb 😀

Where does he live? Perhaps someone on here could suggest something local (to him)?

Don't have any local knowledge, but as he's near the coast - maybe do a scuba diving try dive? There's one place here: http://www.buceoestepona.com/uk/scuba_diving_courses/begginers_programs.html

(No personal knowledge of the place, although I took my eldest daughter on a try dive last year so have some experience of them).

Buy him a decent watch, my girls all saved and got me a Breitling on my 60th, a 60th is a big deal nobody ever sees it coming really, then before you know it 65 happens along and seriously there is nothing good about these birthdays, so we need consolation for having had to put up with all your crap.. 😕

Another idea - British beer can be hard to get hold of in Spain, although I'm not sure whether that's true of Estepona... These guys are Madrid based but deliver to all of mainland Spain: http://www.elcervecero.es/

@eightyeight - lots of gifts around wine, decanters, wine jugs, solid silver filters, wine coasters etc. I do think the event together idea beats just a gift though, how about a tour/tasting event at a Spanish winery, maybe something quite personal done locally. (FYI I'm in my 50's and having one of my kids arrange something to do together with their "old dad" is much more special hence my suggestion)

Fair enough, like I said I'm not familiar with Estepona. (Although I live on an Urbanisation outside Madrid, and there's no British beer here!)

Out of interest, what British beer can you get?

Thanks Jambalaya, wine tour / tasting is a good idea, unfortunately I don't drink.

I'll have a good think about what I can in Cardiff in early February.

The problem with all the wine gifts, is that I'd have to fit it in my hand luggage / try and buy it when I'm there and I'm only visiting for two days.

Cool mate wasn't knocking you
I personally don't live there but bought for family to use for the odd weekend or month
near Alicante main town.

Basically i can get if not all you find at the pumps in the English bars in England but to be honest
I prefer to do go into the Spanish bars

Nice to find someone in Madrid Hola to you 😉

The New Led Zeppelin re-issues, heard a version of Whole lotta love on Simon Mayo last week. It was like hearing it for the first time.
