I was born in Cyprus 60+ years ago and have never been back. My dad was in the army and I was born in Dhekelia.

We are thinking of going October or November. Temperatures look more sensible for a northern type.

So north or south?

We are not the beach or clubbing types, preferimg walking, culture, food etc. we'll go for about two weeks staying in atleast two places. If we go north we'll probably stop in Istanbul, which we've done before and loved.

Any suggestions please, especially for north Cyprus.

Hello mate, spent my fair share of time in Cyprus, but took a holiday to the north a few years back off the back of a work trip.

Stayed in the Bellapais Garden Hotel. Was really nice, the restaurant is top drawer so we ate there most evenings.

The pool isn't heated so be warned!

Loads to see and do, some impressive castles in the hills and old architecture to enjoy.

There's also museums and memorials to the action by the Turkish way back when that led to the partition.

It is very popular with Russians, Cyprus in general is a a bit of a hotbed in terms of intelligence and espionage and their close relationship with Russia also means there's a lot. They tend to favour the resort hotels but they can be avoided.

I'll throw up some pictures and locations a little later, but I'd recommend it.

The castle is rough and ready, but a great visit. That boat is 2300 years old. We picked an average tourist restaurant in the harbour and had some fantastic seafood to that view.

I much prefer the South, mainly because my mother has a house there. There is so much to do; Troodos Mountains and associated villages, Tombs of the Kings in Paphos, Kourion near Episkopi, Kolossi Castle and if that's too staid for you there's always Ayia Napa...

Alternatively, we recently got back from Icmeler in Turkey which was very nice.

St Hilarion Castle
The views are stunning, just behind it inland are some of thew hills the Turkish conducted air assault insert into as part of the military action. There is a base and range complex in the valley below that may be active.
