Me + Missus are heading up for a long weekend at the end of the month. She's no mountain biker, but we'd be looking to do some easy routes in the area if possible. Any suggestions?

Also, if you have any other recommendations, other than climbing Schiehallion, for outdoor activities, fire away!

I would like to hijack the thread a bit here and ask if anyone knows if the Forrestry campsite is still running at Kinlock Rannock I haven't been for a few years, it was a great basic site for £6 per night for the campervan.

Regarding activities there are forrest trails for walking & cycling. The ride up to the railway station is a nice pootle and there is a cafe there. Lovely views of the loch whilst riding also.

There's loads to do in the area (although, I don't have any MTB routes for you unfortunately).

If you head to the marina/lodges on Loch Tay you can hire a load of different boats.

Also, have lunch at Ben Lawers Hotel. It doesn't look like much, but I can assure you, it's bloody brilliant. They don't really have a menu as such, just a huge blackboard of daily/weekly specials. You will be very pleasantly surprised.

Ben Lawers itself is an easy munro to get up (take the longer, but less steep path which passes to the left of Beinn Ghlas, it's a VERY easy route to the summit). The views from Lawers on a clear day are amazing. I often take non-walkers to Lawers as their first munro simply because its so accessible and the views are so rewarding.

Staying at the Dunalastair courtesy of Groupon by any chance??

If you drive through to Rannoch Station, you can walk or cycle along the old "Road to the Isles", which heads north to Corrour. It's basicaly all landy track. Time it right, and you could get the train back to Rannoch (or do it in reverse if that makes more sense with the timetable). It's worth it for the view over Loch Ossian.

There is also an old RoW heading up hill from near the old Rannoch School, through the Black Woods. You'd need to be pretty commited to make this into a loop though.

Hi,

Am not so good at distances... so you may need to look on a map to see if any of these are feasible...

Bikes - the ride around the loch is fairly scenic and on quiet roads. There are obviously ups and downs, but the road is quiet and there are 'beaches' along the loch side which are good for breaks.

Biking for you - If you have a day to youself then you can cut over from the south side of Loch Rannoch into Glen Lyon. From a car park about half way along the loch (near Kilvreicht campsite), follow the signed path up and the onto landy tracks. Cracking landy descent into Bridge of Balgie. You can return by south loch Tay. Big day ride, better on CX bikes than MTB due to the amount of road involved. (I used it for training for Keilder 100)

Walking - Not sure if it would be too far, but as above head up from the car park at Kilvreicht campsite and walk over to Bridge of Balgie for tea and scones at the post office. (You would have to return the same way)

Tay Forest - various way marked walk and cycle trails.

Hope that helps a bit - is a beautiful area.

Not quite. Tesco vouchers @ McDonald Resort 😀

Boat trips sound good, a nice leisurely way to spend a few hours. We've done Lawers, but there's nothing to stop us doing it again weather permitting.

Some good route tips, I'll crack out the map tonight!

beautiful area. *Used to be stone sculptures in woods/beach around loch.

http://www.crannog.co.uk/ on Tay (*they were a bit facist - ie you had to do their visit tour you couldn't just visit), we did the random twisty hilly roads and enjoyed scenery

(There is a watersports centre on Tay)

wanted to do this with gf but it was a bit too out of way:
- http://active.visitscotland.com/findroute/west_highlands/C-The-Trossachs/ cycle out, Paddle steamer back

Port Appin is very scenic and they *appeared* to be building a cycle/walking path along the coast in that area.

As above, various landrover and forestry tracks around the loch for short, easy loops, all rideable from where you are staying.

IIRC, the Macdonald resort also has some boat hire facilities - and an Ice Rink?
