probably a bit vague of a question but here goes...

on sunday i had a fight with my trials bike's kickstart and ended up with 5 internal stiches and 10 external to a nasty gash on the upper part of my right calf on the outside.

the doctor said i couldn't run for about 3 weeks so i'm wondering if i can road cycle (taking it easy) soon after the stitches come out next week as its lower impact, anyone know about these things?

I'd probably ride with the stiches still in. I'm sure someone sensible will be along shortly 👍

I rode (turbo) from a week after a knee replacement, not a lot I admit. That involved one or two stitches though!

About the 5 mins it took me to walk back to the bike rack? (6 in the front of my shin from a flat pedal fail)

That said, the last time I had stitches, I took them out myself at home with a pair of sidecutters and needle nosed pliers. Just boiled the ends first.

NOt really my field. Its the deep stitches that would worry me - cut into the muscle? Exercise could tear it again?

I'd be pretty wary - if its just the skin I wouldn't worry too much but if its deeper I would.

no its deep, only light muscle damage but it was touch and go whether i was to be taken to the main hospital, hence my concern.

thanks for the answers though, think i'll take it easy and do what i'm told.

You need to take care to keep it wound area clean without washing road/dirt through/near it , that includes for a short while after stitches out.

Whatever you do, don't allow the wound to become infected. Ten days should be enough but if bits of the wound are still scabby and red, be careful. I had to go on penicillin because my clavicle plate wound got infected over Christmas.
