All going a bit crazy here. I work in community mental health. Yesterday we were asked if we had any leave coming up more than 5 days, if we had existing health concerns, are we prepared to work extra shifts. Hays Personnel are looking for 300 nurses to work in a call centre operating a helpline and say the work is for 8 months +. They are expecting that in the next 5-7 days we will be looking at something similar to what's happening in Italy. Talk of immediate payments of $750 to low income people to stimulate the economy and closing schools for winter. Also being nigh on winter now it's also our flu season. People are naturally very worried. Lots of medication comes from China and obviously the supply chain is disrupted. Supermarkets are getting hammered. I'm off work today but need to do a food shop and might just do an online shop rather than risk the hoards of toilet roll panic buyers.

I think this is worse for me as I see the daily sit reps from management. Kinda worried tbh. (I'm also type 1 diabetic too.. Made sure I've got my supplies in!)

Oh and the guy I work with (we do after hours and weekend crisis intervention and co-response with police to section people) has just been in UK for the last 5 weeks, flew back to OZ with a 5 hour stopover in Dubai yesterday and we're on shift on Sunday arvo.

PM's just announced no mass gatherings of 500+. From Monday (so he can go to the footy on Saturday)

It would be hilarious if it wasn't for real. That man should never be put in front of a TV camera.

P.S. I'm not a big a fan of this softly softly approach. The disease is here (Perth, WA in my case). We've got the region's biggest oil & gas exhibition going on at the moment and the big finals of the basketball tonight (a big deal in WA). The general public don't care if it gets cancelled. We know it's in our own best interests.

I had a cold this week. I phoned up the hotline and was told I was 'not at risk'- no advice to get tested. It's just a matter of time until we get local transmission of the virus, so why not get a handle on it now rather than waiting until it becomes a problem?

Yup. Perth too (south of the river)

He's an utter bellend. How can you stop crowds going to the GP, say it's OK to go to the footy, but no crowds from Monday. Based on medical advice?

I can't see the Wildcats game going ahead... Well, it may do sans crowds!

Conversely, across the ditch here in NZ: surprise surprise, "She'll be right, bro" it's pretty much business as usual*.

Probably it's because we've had so few confirmed cases, I suspect it's just a matter of time before more cases crop up and the first deaths start, given how our economy is driven by tourism.

*a few companies have instigated working from home, and there's noticeably more hand sanitiser everywhere but concerts, sports events etc still going ahead despite all the recent cases being linked to attendance at a Tool gig.

I heard people were flying to NZ in order to travel on to Aus? Just amazing they have over 10k cases now in UK in what seems to be a little over a week. Watched Boris say that "you will lose loved ones" which is pretty brave to say on national tv!

You were right. Just announced.

And it seems the lack of testing is due to shortage of test kits.

I'll just take my own precautions regardless of what the WA / Aus government advise. Kids still have to go to school, but I'll probably work from home next week.

Good luck @aphex_2k with your job. I think you're in for a tougher ride than us desk jockies.

On the bright side... Isolating WA just means blocking about two major roads? I'm genuinely curious how the mines are going to handle this, big FIFO camps like around Newman would be so vulnerable. Shares gym, mess facilities and loads of flights.

Hopefully you guys don't get it badly. Keep riding and look after yourself mate.

To be honest OP what your saying is no different to UK and what people who work in the NHS are being asked to do.

Never said it was. I'd imagine it was the same everywhere, being a pandemic and all that.

And the wee international airport, and Fremantle docks, and the largest naval base in Aus...

Potentially worse in the southern hemisphere as it will coincide with your winter flu season - have family in SA. Hope you all stay safe and well

The ten thousand cases is an estimate, not tested cases, based on people having had it, or contracted without reporting etc.

Also Boris didn't say that, what he said was "many more families are going to lose loved ones before their time". So, not massively different to what you've quoted but significantly different enough to be read/interpreted differently.

And regarding your colleague, yep, he's been in the UK for 5 weeks and you're due to work with him. There are almost 70 million people living here. Even if the estimate of cases is a factor of 10 out and there are 100000 people infected, the chances of him having contracted it through contact with one of these people is 0.1%. So one in one thousand.

Italy has had 1200 deaths since Feb 21. 250 people died yesterday alone. I appreciate you correcting my quote but I think your estimate of only 10 in 100000 being infected are best case scenario figures with likely data from countries who have under-reported....happy to be wrong on this though.

Gor a gig tonight which is still on.... Sleaford mods. Not sure I'm going.

What I said was, even if the estimate of 10000 being infected is a factor of 10 out, i.e. there are 100000 infected then there would be a 0.001% chance that your colleague came into contact with one of that 100000 people.

Sleaford mods? I’d definitely not go!

I’m meant to be starting a new job is Sydney on the 6th of April. Just the small matter of having to move from the U.K. in the meantime.

What could possibly go wrong?!

🤪

Umm... Good luck? Anyone flying into NZ will be quarantined for 24 days. I expect our pm to do something similar of course once he's had his weekend of fun.

The comment about the road's was half a joke :p but more seriously I think I would rather be someplace like Perth than most cities. The population density is so much lower than the UK / Europe and that's gotta help. Also even heading into autumn/winter the climates that bit friendlier.

The flip side is admittedly I can see a lot of Australians pretty much ignoring advice not to travel. especially if it got in the way of a winter trip to Bali.

@WillH

Sounds like that position may have changed more recently, since you posted. My sister woke up this morning having to tell my 6yo nephew that they won't be going on the holiday of a lifetime now that NZ has imposed 2wks self-isolation upon arrival - they had a 3wk camper van holiday booked and paid for and were due to leave in two weeks. Don't know which will be worse; telling him or coming to terms with the £5.5k loss of flights and camper van.

Umm… Good luck? Anyone flying into NZ will be quarantined for 24 days. I expect our pm to do something similar of course once he’s had his weekend of fun.

I thought it was 2wks self-isolation?

just finished an email to Royal Melbourne Childrens Hospital asking if any input on shortage essential medication...went (2weeks early, naughty) to get her monthly supply essential medication from regular pharmacy who stock not many do and only has 1 week on hand...they checked and none at supplier..hopefully sourced 2months from another branch but hadn't turned up when expected 🙁

meanwhile I check the Aus' Government pharmaceutical shortages website and says none available since 3rd March until end of April...possibly Ok we have 3months on hand (not panic buying just normal habit) depends on how managed when stock arrives and just to get kicked in the nuts as a parent the Aus government website list the shortage as having "low impact" ... pretty mean if have condition where no drugs means you ain't go make it beyond a couple of days

@househusband - yep, a few big changes today. Send like the powers that be are catching up. No details on how they're going to be enforcing the self-isolation on arrival though.

I’m in Perth, too. Had tickets to first Eagles game next week, that’s not happening. Have prepared staff to WFH - likely to decide tomorrow. Don’t see my Lombok trip over Easter - meeting up with my 75 yo parents from UK, flying thru Singa - happening. Friend from DK flying home tonight rather than original plans of next Thursday to get back before borders shut. My work trips likely all cancelled. And I’d say Perth is pretty well positioned to weather C19... though obvs without toilet paper.

I imagine the PM to scrap the "stepped response" once he's had his weekend of fun. Off to Freo now for the gig. Expect it to be pretty dead so I can keep 3ft away from people. Plus it's raining so most Perfians won't leave the house anyway.

I was meant to fly home from Kazakhstan on Thursday but Lufthansa cancelled the route. I decided to have a few nights in Almaty before heading back to work tomorrow. If I had got home I would likely have to self isolate and then travel back to Kazakhstan and then be quarantined for 14 days upon arrival.

Well that was crap. Absolutely pissed or down. No coat. Soaked. Had 2 Jameson n coke. Watch the support band (oosterbanger) kinda doom grunge... Not my cuppa tea. Got ridiculous stomach cramps out of nowhere and sat on the bus for an hour to get home. Where it's still raining but my previously soaked jeans and merino t shirt are dry now, soon to be soaked again for the 20 Min walk home.

And I need to fart so bad but it's risky...

Italy has had 1200 deaths since Feb 21. 250 people died yesterday alone.

Italy, though, has the greatest number of elderly people with underlying health issues of anywhere else in Europe, which is probably why they’re having the problems they are..

True. But I think there are a few countries in Europe that are similar. But Japan has the highest and we've not heard of much from there.

Also looks like testing kits are in very short supply in WA and I imagine the other states and territories are the same. Wonder if we can order some in from... China?

My wife’s head office is shut down - head office for local health trust.

My office - although, I am currently not at work - I am aware, is extending work from home arrangements - utilities business.

BBC News - Coronavirus: Australia orders all arrivals to self-isolate for 14 days

Looks like we'll not be visiting family in Perth in July then, unless things have improved by then.

Scomo is too slow and too much focus on reminding us that they are using "the best medical evidence". Since they've said no cruise ships, 2 cruise ships have docked and people were told to go home and self isolate. The Sydney ship that just came in has 3 cases of confirmed Cv19. There were 2000 + on board.
