My campervan has rusty spots and some larger rusty areas where it looks like the previous owner has got too close to metal roadsigns and they've 'chattered' along the edge of the roof.

I've removed all the rust and primed and sanded with filler primer. I've been spray painting the primed areas with rattle cans. Its a flat white paint and although the van was polished and shiny when I bought it about six years ago, its now got no shine and looks a bit tatty.

I've got some cutting compound but now I notice the polisher I bought says 'do not use abrasive cutting compounds, for polishing only'. Its an oscillating head job so wobbles. Is this type unsuitable for cutting? Brand new so can return it.

My paint is flat white and almost all of the areas I'm sorting are above head height, its an Iveco so the panelwork has lots of creases/indentations.

Bearing in mind it doesn't need to be a perfect finish, do I need to cut it to blend in the new shiny paint with the old matt, or can I take the much safer option of just polishing it to bring the gloss back on the old paint? Like I said, perfection is not needed, I just want it to shine a bit and when you walk past it doesn't look rusty or patchy, no one is going to be eyeballing along the panels 🙂

Last thing I want to happen is needlessly use cutting compound and take the paint off the vulnerable edges and have to start touching it up again!

(I don't think hand cutting is a viable option as its a 6 metre high top van 🙂 )

Just t cut by hand. You're bound to polish through on all the edges with a mop.Half way through you'll wish you hadn't started.
Make that decision now and go for a ride instead.

Reckon there is a proper risk of going through the edges even with just polish, not cutting compound?
