We have an internal 100mm thick block wall and would really like to mount an ultra thin TV set back into it.
How deep (if any) could we go into the brickwork? The TV's I've looked at are about 75mm deep including bracket.
Alternatively, does anyone own a TV that looks like a mirror?
How would you get rid of the heat build up?
Make the recess bigger than the TV giving it room to breath?
Not sure really but I'm open to suggestions?
build out using stud work is how I've seen it done
Ah thought you were wanting it to look seamless with the wall
build a false wall around it
As CF mentions stud it out then board, skim.
Saying that 75mm is not going to stick out that much is it?
75mm is quite deep for a modern tv, my 3 or 4 YO Sony is 40mm with the bracket, it may be cheaper to get a decent bracket?
I have seen the mirror TV's, work well out of daylight & direct light, but reflectt badly as you would expect.
HTH.
Wife says definitely can't stud it out as we need all the room. Anyone own a really flat TV that they could measure total depth including bracket?
2unfit2ride - what model is your TV?
It's a KDL-46NX723 ( I had to turn the thing on to find that out), ,just don't ask what bracket it is 🙂
Cheers.
How is your wall constructed? Is it block with plasterboard battoned over the top? If so then you might get away with just cutting out the plasterboard. I've got a thin 32" TV in my bedroom. Its pretty thin though not as thin as tv's you can get now. I've got a mounting system that uses a cable so you literally hang it on the wall so it mounts the TV closer to the wall than any bracket system. In my case it sits between two doors and is only about 5mm proud of the door frames, so would pretty much sit in the depth of the plasterboard thickness and the buttons behind (about 25mm or so).
I would think that cutting a recess into clockwork would be a big and tricky job, not to mention very messy.
Projector?
I have a projector. Relatively cheap way to get a massive screen, the downside is having to make the room dark!
Projector not really practical.
Will have to look for the flattest TV with the thinnest surround that I can find and just mount it normally on the wall I think?
Can't stud it out as you need the room
I wonder how we all coped in the old days of cathode ray tubes
#firstworldproblem
My Philips is 28mm thick but it has a little skirt at the bottom that sticks out another 30mm. I'm sure you'll get one similar thickness all the way down. You can dig the bracket into the wall or make a simple thin mount. What do you plan to do about cables.
You will probably have thought of this, but if you recess it, then change the TV in a couple of years, you could be looking at a hole that is not of a suitable shape/size and you're back to square one.
This may be relevant if the "fad" for wrap around TVs takes off.
edit:
Not sure if building regs stipulates the amount of depth that can be taken. I would sink 47mm cooker boxes into a 100mm block but wouldn't want to go much deeper. Also, 75mm would only leave 25mm for screws unless you want them sticking out in the next door room.
Rwamartin - some very valid points.
Safest way seems to be the normal wall mount.
Will go and look at thin TV's the next time I'm in John Lewis I think.
Just have to convince the wife it won't look ugly.

Out of interest, is this a new TV in a new/different room or just your current one - just curious how it 'looks' at the moment.
Tvs should be at eye level when seated. Far more comfortable than looking up.
If you're going to recess an enormous TV 75mm into a 100mm block work wall, then you'll want to put a lintel in as the wall won't be structurally stable. Just stick on a bracket.
I would be worried about future proofing, you aren't going to have that TV forever, what happens when you change it for a thinner one and it sits too far back or a bigger one and the recess isn't wide enough? TVs are getting thinner and thinner each year it won't be long before they are simply plastic sheets. I say mount it directly on the wall with the thinnest bracket you can find if you must and direct any efforts into hiding the wires.
I'm recessing mine into a false chimney breast. I'm doing it because I want to sink wall mount speakers into it and drop a projector screen in front of it but it may work for you also as you won't lose the depth from the whole room.
Lets be honest . It sticking out from the wall slightly is the least of your worrys if your wall mounting a tv....
The only place ive ever seen it look good was in a pub.
Building regs 😆

This ^^^ you'll need it to sit an extra 150mm bigger than the tv at both ends.
Please post pics when it's done because it 'could' look awful 😆

Not very STW is it? You should be making it into a real chimney breast and installing a wood burning stove. Failing that, have a rolling screensaver of some logs on fire.
