My much-loved Nexus 5 is doing the boot loop thing.
If it's not fixable I'll need to get a replacement phone of a similar size (5.5in) with the following attributes...
- Reasonably fast
- 32gb min
- Good camera
- Not fragile
- Clean Android experience
I see a lot of mention of Motorola phones as being good value and nice to use?
Nokia 8
Nokia 8. I bought one a couple of weeks ago to replace a dead Nexus 5x, £350 in Carphone Warehouse.
Nokia 8 looks nice enough but top of my budget at £300 and a bit bigger than I'd like ideally.
Do you two use them out on the bike? I found the 5X a bit cumbersome and the camera lens broke on me twice so I've got wary of bigger phones.
Middle_oab managed a box open Nokia 8 from Argos eBay shop, on the day they had 20% off all electrics, so well under £300....
Not many phones are small these days - Sony compact?
Moto G5 plus is doing the boy well. Bit bigger than the Nexus 5 but all half decent cheap phones seem pretty big. I think only Sony do well spec'd smaller phones. Either that or a random chinese special.
Agree with Jeffl, moto G's are great phones for the price. My whole family have them
My Nexus got replaced by a One+ Very happy with it and its now 3 years old and still going strong.
I got the Wife a Huawei and that seem very good and could be on my replacement list if the One+ get to expensive.
I got a Moto X4 a few weeks ago for less than £200 from Carphonewarehouse.
5.2" screen 32gb, dual lens camera, waterproof and dust resistant, pretty much stock Android 8 with a few useful additions like hand movements to switch on torch or open camera.
All the reviews I read said the camera was slow but it's really not and takes much better images than my old Sony Xperia Z3 Compact ever did.
I went through the third and 4th gen of moto after my n5 died, tbh I wasn't happy with either.
Eventually I bit the bullet and went back on a contract with a Pixel 2. I bloody love it. Very much the successor to the Nexus series, just a shame about the silly price.
Thanks for all your suggestions, it's really good to get real world experiences and there are clearly loads more decent budget options than I knew about.
I'm finding it really frustrating that everything seems to be about 150mm long now, rather than the 135mm of my N5 - which to me is the perfect size.
For full disclosure, I have a 5X that I use at home and for satnav and podcast duties, whereas I used the N5 for riding, photos and actual phone calls.
I agree on size.
My G3 is now playing up (2.5 years old), and I'm looking at trying to get a G5s (not plus) or Nokia 6.
I went from a 5 to a 5x and didn't find the size increase a problem. My 5x got the boot loop but and lg returned it fit me. Had to buy a phone in the meantime as it was away 2 weeks - got a 5s GS plus. It's taken a while to get used to the size increase of this one though. Good phone otherwise.
My HTC one m8 has just died after 4 years service. I picked up a Moto X4 (like the other poster earlier, got it from car phone warehouse where it has just been lowered to £200 from £350). Only thing is you have to get a case for it as it has a glass back and is like holding a slippery eel. All the reviews for it seem to be a bit critical but they are based on it being sold at the higher price and bench marking it against better phones. My real world experience is that this phone walks all over my old HTC and I'm very pleased with it.
If you don't mind going Chinese then have a look at the Xiaomi A1. Google One phone so guaranteed updates and clean Android, great spec and silly price (4gb/64gb ones were under £150 last time I looked).
Otherwise I'd be looking at the Motorola X4.
I too dislike the current fashion for huge phones; I don't want a flat screen telly in my pocket.
I had a Nexus 5 and loved it, and have since had two Sony compacts, an X5 and currently on an XZ. I like them (hence getting a second)
Nokia 8 can currently be had for £279.99. I'd be tempted...

I didn't want to go too big either, Samsung A3 seems to be a good choice, the only downside is it's 16gb I think.
Edit: I'm not so impressed with the proper case though, the funky light up edge thing only comes on for certain notifications and makes the case bulky (and it's just that plastic that refracts light to the edge, it's the phone screen that makes it light up)
Thread hijack!
How does the MotoX4 compare to the MotoG5s?
My wife likes an even smaller phone and got a Sony Xperia last time, I'm really not a fan of the ergonomics so I'm afraid Sony are out.
The Galaxy S7 looks a nice size and spec but it is getting on a bit now and you only seem able to get them at a decent price from retailers I've never heard of.
God I hate reading tech reviews.
Might not be useful but I recently moved from a Nexus 5 to a Pixel 2, but if the Pixel 2 hadn't been a gift I wouldn't have made the switch.
I've had the N5 since the release date and had served me well, I replaced the speaker, microphone, camera and battery over the years. The screen was also cracked but still fully working.
The P2 is modern and fast but has too many faults:
No wireless charging
No 3.5mm audio out
Stupid bluetooth volume levelling issues
Very slippy to hold compared to rubber coated N5, I cracked the glass back on day two
New charging port means changing all my leads, 6 so far
I doubt it is going to be easily repairable
Way too expensive
It is fast and the camera is great but I suspect it is way over specc'ed for what I need. I don't play games, I'm not going to do VR with it, I really just need to the camera, google maps, music, and browsing when i'm bored.
MrsV8 got a Moto G5 which seems to the do the job, can't say my phone is any better at anything really despite being twice the cost. Actually hers is less annoying due to all of the above!
I miss my Nexus 5... #sniff#
The N5 is such a brilliant phone innit. Does everything you need and (normally) just works.
Why do phone manufacturers have to keep totally changing models so much? Why not keep a winner like the N5 going but make evolutionary improvements every couple of years?
Sony XA2 gets good reviews, excellent camera.
I've ordered the Nokia 8 for £280.
Seems like a lot of phone for the money and I'll have to learn to live with that extra 15mm.
Thanks folks.
You won't be disappointed, I'm impressed with the one middle_oab has.
If clean android and few guaranteed OS updates are important to you, look at phones that are on the AndroidOne programme. Not only do you get clean Android to start off, but you get 2 Android OS updates guaranteed thereafter to keep your phone OS up to date for a couple of years without the unknowns. And, because it's clean Android, the OS update will be yours shortly after each new Android OS launch, also three years security updates I believe.
Xiaomi Mi A1?
So what phones are on the Android One programme?

I don't think it's been going that long, but seems to me to be very worthwhile with a phone, as it takes away all the speculation of "will they, won't they?" on future android OS updates. Basically, you buy a new phone with Android O and you know from the outset that you will get as a minimum, Android P & Q, guaranteed, keeping it up to date for at least 2 years. And you'll get the updates pretty quickly, if not immediately, as it's stock Android. In future, as far as I'm concerned, AndroidOne will be a must have for me.
I’m impressed with the one middle_oab has.
Has he had any issues with the fingerprint sensor?
Mine stubbornly refuses to recognise my print, which is annoying.
Not a recommendation but I wondered if anyone has tried the LG V30? Can't seem to find one in a shop to try out but I'm really interested to see if the inbuilt DAC is as good as I've heard as I'm finding the audio on iPhones to be quite lacking. Problem is the reviews bag off the screen so how bad is it really?
Why don't you pluck up the courage and give the S7 dealers you've never heard of a ring. Some of them will be open today.
