I have just had "Dewali" explained to me (light banishing evil and so forth) and have been wished a happy one. When asked what I thought, I said: "Well, I'm English, so I like to reserve my fireworks for November the 5th, when we celebrate THE BURNING OF THE CATHOLIC"!!

😉

he has bought a salient fact forward though.

bonfire night is such a little understood and rather nasty incarnation of religious genocide.

Oh Elfin, as you once said to me - "Give it a rest". Either that or get a sense of humour and an emoticon recognition device...

Interesting point, but just to clear up was he a criminal catholic or a catholic criminal? I feel the difference is important.

Every Catholic was a criminal at that point in English history, no?

I've got a sense of humour. I had a right laugh when I read about your incident in St Katherines Dock/East Smithfield. 😆

EDIT: In the interests of 'Cultural Harmony', I'll 'give it a rest' if you do the same. Fair deal?

So someone who is 'English' can't celebrate Diwali? And 'we' are all Protestant?

I hate to say it but I'm with Elfin on this one.

Wasn't it yesterday? Isn't today the preparation for the other bit that I can't pronounce, their new year. I wished my chum up the paper shop happy diwali yesterday (he had his caste mark on). It's a happy festival of light victory over dark, a bit early over here, ours takes place around Dec 21st and Christians jumped on it to promote the birth of their prophet.

Nothing to stop you celebrating with them, they certainly don't mind, Hinduism is a very broad church which is more than can be said for a certain other religion, they just haven't commercialised it to the extend the Judaeo Capitalists have ours, happy holidays...

After all the misery caused by the Catholic church over the centuries I would quite happily burn an effigy of the Pope. Contraception, hording wealth and child abuse denial are three very obvious reasons to not be a fan of Roman Catholics. Hardly contraversial as I explained to a very observant Catholic friend a few weeks ago. Even she had to admit to the second and third points.

I don't think "child abuse denial" is part of the Roman Catholic Doctrine.

In fact, I'm pretty sure it's not. So scratch that from your list.

All religions have issues - simplest to avoid it all and create your own. I like trail gremlins myself...
