Yeah I know, but any informed opinions (or otherwise) on how busy the motorways are likely to be? Travelling from Sheffield to Pembrokeshire tomorrow (M1 / M42 / M50 / heads of the valleys road).

Its about 5 hours so set off late morning and suck it up, or leave it until later?

I think summer holidays for most places don't start until next week so I'm hoping it'll be ok, but its a good weather forecast.

Busy at the entrance to the W Country (M4-M5 corner) already. Can’t imagine it’ll be much different on the M50

Kids have broken up from school today for the summer. What do you think?

Don't know about where other people live, but the roads have been chokka block around me for a good few months now...far busier than before COVID even, so yes, tomorrow will be a nightmare. We're off to Norfolk so bracing ourselves. Will just have to bite the bullet and grin and bear it.

Will have to look at Google Maps tomorrow, there's a couple of other options.

Personally I’d pack up the car tonight and leave at 4am. Get down early, have a swim and a snooze on the beach. Sitting in a traffic jam in 25 degrees and sheet sunshine wouldn’t appeal!

Edit. Summer hols started today in Wales

The early start did appeal, but unfortnately not an option. I think about half the UK (except Scotland) start summer holidays today, the other in the middle of next week.

Where are you based? All the kids I know break up either mid next week, or the beginning of the week after.

Sheffield to Pembs? It's an hour from here, Swansea, to Tenby or Whitland in light traffic, and I've never made it from Sheffield to here in under 5 hours, despite what the route planners say. A few weeks ago it took us over 2 hours to get to Tenby, 50 miles away.

True, best I've ever done is 6hrs, the suggested route was via A465 which I've never done before, its now saying 4h50!

Agreed - it's only independent schools that are breaking this week as far as I know (certainly in North and West Yorkshire).

Yeah, the A465 is fine, and more scenic than the M4. It's normally my choice when I'm coming from that direction. (But it's not THAT much quicker. 😀 )

I came back on the A465 a few weeks ago and there were miles of coned off dual carriageway...from well before Merthyr to past Hirwaun...not sure how permanent it was.

 or leave it until later?

Is always my preferred option, Overnight if you can, Roads are empty, it's cooler...But anytime after 7.00pm is considerably lighter traffic-wise

A lot of schools in Sheffield broke up today so traffic likely to be heavier tomorrow than usual I would have thought.

Spent the day razzing round Devon on the motorbike. Got back on the M5 at Taunton and it was a carpark all the way back to Bristol. Filtering for 40 miles: hideous! Tbh, everywhere I've been the last month or so has been horrendously busy, far worse than usual. Staying in the garden with a beer is becoming more and more appealing.

The head of the valleys road has roadworks with 40 mph for miles. Still nicer than the M4 but don't expect it to be quick. Bristol area schools don't seem to break up til next week and the last few weekends have been ok if you leave early. So I would say leave as early as you can and have patience.

I'm in Sheffield and my parents are in pembs. I always travel woodhead/snake, m60, m56, Wrexham, Welshpool, Newtown, Aberystwyth and down the coast.

An alternative is the same route but turn south from Newtown, through Llandrindod Wells, Llandovery and carmarthen

I'm from Shrewsbury and can confirm that the 2nd half of this is a thoroughly pleasant drive indeed.
