So am sat in an Indian internet cafe in Devrukh - small town half way between Goa and Pune, and just tried to back up my main camera SD card onto a portable hard disk. Using internet cafe as i stupidly skimped and didn't buy the adapter for my ipad - started copying photos ok and then it said - "problem with image" - so clicked skip - next thing i realise the card is empty - its only copied 5 images on to the hard drive - and ive lost everything from the last 3 weeks of travelling. Absolutely gutted - had some beautiful images of people, scenery all the usual stuff. Guy in the cafe was v apologetic but said that there were so many voltage spikes in their supply, and that sd cards are very susceptible to getting wiped.

Just wondered whether there was any possibility of retrieving them magically from somewhere.... may have a little cry....

It might be possible to get them back with the right software. Whatever you do don't carry on using the card as you risk writing over any data. There was a thread on this a couple of weeks ago.

You could try Piriform Recuva if the bloke will let you put software on his computers?

Not gonna work though if a voltage spike has fried the card.

Zero Assumption Recovery has worked for me in the past... if the data's still accessible & you can install s/w on the PC of course. Good luck!

I've used ZAR in the past too, it's rescued two SD cards of mine that crapped out... Good Luck!

Check out software options before handing it over to a firm. SD cards don't just "lose" data - due to the nature of flash, the data's still on there until it's overwritten. So it can be found again (relatively) easily, using just software.

Another vote for trying software first: Photorec is also good.
