I have some medical entertainments lined up for Monday and part of the fun is the insertion of a catheter I understand that some people do this for fun but it sounds mighty unpleasant. Anyone want to share a reassuring story?

I insert them myself ~7 times a day. It's no big deal but I have no idea why you'd do it for fun. It was also a very odd experience the first few times, painless though. If you aren't inserting it yourself then you don't have that initial concern that you're accidentally poking a hole in something vital either.

Apparently it's called "sounding". Don't ask me how I know that 🙁

Make sure they leave the local anaesthetic in long enough. Two minutes preferably.
When putting them in the temptation is to rush cos you are holding someone else's willy.

I teach inserting catheters and make folk do this

I had it done in front of a whole load of medical students. My bladder was filled with water for a test and once the catheter was removed I resembled a mini fountain - not remotely humiliating 🤣

Unconscious is best. After my big off and waking up in hospital with no clue what happened, I realised they'd stuck one in. Only had to deal with removal but not the agonising experience I was thinking it might be.

DrJ - just tell them - "its not gone numb yet". thing is you have to put the anesthetic gel in and then pinch the end to stop the gel coming out again so you ( as the practitioner) end up standing there pinching someones bell end and making small talk. A slightly weird situation all round.

Sorry - that does not help. any consolation IME ( of putting them in not having one) people rarely scream

Only been catheterised for a period of a week.
When it was first put in I'd already been given morphine.... So it was kinda fun!

The biggest issue was when it was finally removed - I'd got used to lying in bed and just letting it go when I wanted a wee..... Very nearly forgot I couldn't do that when the catheter was gone!!

I had a camera and needle inserted up and into my bladder last Monday, even that didn't hurt (no anesthetic, never used any with the intermittent catheters either, maybe the less temporary ones are different). What did hurt a bit was 21 injections of Botox into my bladder though...
