I'm getting a new kitchen courtesy of my housing association and i was wondering if this is "good practice" to have cable runs loose behind the plasterboard, i ask as i used to work with a mate doing remedial damp proof work and all electrical work we had done by our tame sparky was always run in conduit, granted the main wall will be hidden by the kitchen units/worktop but as for the rest? - i thought it was standard practice to affix electrical cables securely and preferably in conduit rather than leave them flapping loose behind plasterboard or ami being a dick?

Critique away.. oh and i see they must have ****ed up the original hole for the extractor fan as it appears they have measured once/drilled twice.

Nothing unusual in running cable behind plasterboard without conduit. Cables should generally run either vertically or horizontally from sockets/switches so you can reasonably predict the risky zones when drilling in the future.

Cheers poly, i guess my mate was just fussy with running all cables inside conduit.

Depends on age, RCD, etc, but no general need for conduit in a house. It would be good practice to clip the cables to the wall to keep everything within the safe zone and protect against pulling connections apart, but again no general need in a house unless greater than 5m drops

If anything its better practice to have them loose as there is less chance of the cable getting damaged by an errant drill. Only issue would be that the cable needs to be in the so called safe zone anything too loose might be just outside.

It’s Bell End / Grandas Scants from this seasons Barrow and Fall collection

You need to show your sparky this...

...but to be fair the level of work probably reflects the amount being paid by the housing association for the job!

Cheers for replies folks, guess I’m being a bit of a dick/overly critical of their wiring, and the purple walls, yellow skirting and orange ceiling 😳 are due to a particularly good October for mushrooms 🍄, think it was 1998 🤔 or thereabouts. Seemed a good idea at the time

Social housing issue innit. Are they going to paint it a lovely shade of magnolia?

Looks rough to be fair, be interesting to see what it will look like when they try and patch it up.....

Talking of magnolia. Will never forget when i was on a job second fixing an extension for a builder who bought a job lot of super cheap magnolia. He was down to paint the extension, the lady came back one day and asked if he could paint the rooms different colours as she hated magnolia.
He promptly told her that she has to have magnolia as it keeps the damp out!
She fell for it and he got the job to decorate the rest of the house in the stuff!

Decorators do all the patching in of plaster. At least I do, love a sparky with a drill wandering around.

It's my responsibility to take care of painting so a mate is coming in to do that for me and another mate has offered to laser cut stainless sheet for the main wall/fit around the wall units etc so my mushroom inspired purple orange/yellow phase is hidden for eternity (no bad thing).
